I have a simple document, which was scanned. I need to use the color replacement tool. There is a section that is various hues of Orange, namely #FF7D34. I need to make this Christmas Red. Using the replacement tool, I can’t get it to turn this color to red. Perhaps I don’t know what I am doing, but I’ve tried all different modes and samplings… The document is RGB/8, with Working RGB as the color profile. The layer I am trying to edit has no other adjustments on it as it was a bitmap.

If someone could tell me how to do this that would rock!

Try running the fuzziness slider up

What setting is that? I played with all of the brush settings and nothing works… it’s rather weird…

Image > Adjustments > Replace Color

There will be a Fuzziness slider on the dialog box that pops up

Oh, I wasn’t referring to the adjustments one. I am referring to the "Color Replacement Tool" which I believe is new to Photoshop CS. This way, the edits don’t affect my entire image. I only need to edit certain areas.

The color replacement action applies to the entire image only if there is no selection. You can confine it to a restricted area by selecting that area. The action is further confined by the color chosen (with the feature’s eyedropper) and the fuzziness chosen.

Between the two restrictions (selection outline and fuzziness range about a central color), ordinarily, you can limit the action quite easily without a fussy selection. The selection can usually be "quick and dirty"—not tedious. The fuzziness parameter does the detailed work for you.

If CS has a related new feature, I doubt that it is significantly more effective—although possibly a little more convenient would be my guess.

george, without having explored it fully yet, i’d say the color replace tool in CS with the added benifit that it’s a "brush-like" tool, like the healing tool.

Dave,

Then there is a new Replace Color brush in CS. Thank you. I’ll have to wait til I see it. I’m judging by CS features I have seen demonstrated like, for example, Shadows/Highlights which, though convenient for the casual user, will never replace the flexibility provided by Curves.

SH for me, is worth the price of upgrade alone. More so than the healing brush in 7. You gotta see it to believe it!

George – Shadow&Hilight isn’t even like curves. It isn’t a replacement, or a convenience.

God bless you chris. I must’ve revered about a dozen photos already with SH! And many more to go. Many are real gems taken outdoors in low light conditions (at night) with my oly 3020 zoom. I’m amazed at how much detail is still in the images even though they normally appear very dark. Some of the best are a Mummer’s Parade in Maryland from last year. Can’t wait to go through the rest of my dark shots. I’m really glad I saved them!

Thank you!

Chris and Dave

I believe you and look forward to CS for one more reason. Chris, how about a clue on the SH mechanism?
