We have some files on a computer with photoshop 6.0 the files were created on. Now when we try to delete the file rename the file or save the file on top of it self i always get the error message that the file is in use or was not closed.

If you copy the file or save it with a different name you can do what ever with it. But then the same error message may develop at a later time.

the computer is a dell dimension 2350 running xp pro . with 1 gig ram

1 30gig hdd and 1 40 gig hdd.

any assistant will be greatly appericated.

rebooting the computer does not fix the problem i am going to check task manager right now to kill un-needed processes. did that and a couple let me delete at the end but i still have alot that will not delete or rename or save over the top of them selves.

Jerome,

Are these files resident on a network by chance?

Have you run any hard disk utilities like Norton Disk Doctor or CHKDSK?

Have you run Norton Utilities? Defragged the drive recently?

Try using Norton CleanSweep to find the file and delete it.

Was the file created under a different username. Sometimes I’ve noticed that a file can only be deleted by the user that created it.

Hope some of this helps.

Apparently this is not a problem with Photoshop or any other application for that matter, but one to blame on windows. I’ve found I can usually only get around it by logging out and back in again. I’m not sure, but I seem to remember that sometimes rebooting didn’t help, but simply logging back in did (sounds bizarre, yes – don’t count on my memory on this one). I’ve had this problem with a variety of files, and folders as well. Immeasurably frustrating, ain’t it?

Let’s go play outside instead.

Files are all on the same computer they were created on and worked on.

Same user name.
No defrag or new AV software.

Logging off and back on did it, thank you very much!

And currently the weather here in mandan ND is 30F and the wind chill makes it feel like 17F a nice warm day we are all just waiting for our forcasted 25" of snow this weekend.

Wow! It’s still with us! Even on PSCS.

This issue has been kicking around these parts for months now.

If you reboot or exit and enter PS each time, it will be a nightmare.

You have locked handles that refuse to unlock. Here’s a utility to help:

<http://www.sysinternals.com>

Download Process Explorer, then under handles, hit Ctrl F and type in the file name you are trying to save. It will take you there and you can unlock it, safely BTW, even though you get warnings about doing so.
