PSCS lock up on loading

I have Photoshop CS on my Toshiba Window XP home notebook computer. Quite often, PSCS locks up when I load it. In the splash screen, just beneath the version number, the display stops on "Reading Text Global Resources…Done." But doesn’t finish loading.

I have other programs running in the background, but they haven’t caused problems before.

I know that holding down Shift (or was it Ctrl?) immediately after launching the program resets the preferences, and that allows me to run PS, but then I have to change all my settings back the way they’re supposed to be.

Anyone else experiencing this? Is there another way to fix this without dumping my prefs?

Thanks

Might have a bad font in there… Remove all but the core system fonts, then slowly add fonts 5-10 at a time, lauching Photoshop in between each addition. When Photoshop stops responding, you know that the bad font is located in the 5-10 fonts you last installed. From there it’s just process of elimination.

FWIW, a font management program like Adobe Type Manager or Extensis Suitcase can help make this process far easier.

I still have PS7 installed on this system and it loads fine.

The same thing has happened to me. It last for about two days and then all of a sudden it started opening fine. Don’t have any idea what changed.
