I came across an ad in a magazine a few months ago advertising for film separations. You would give them a full color photo and they would supply you with a 2 color separation that looked like a full color image! It wasn’t strictly a duo tone. It was separated with some other method.

I can’t find the ad any more and I didn’t bookmark the site as it was only for Mac and I’m on PC. It was also very expensive and you didn’t actually buy software. You paid for a certain amount of separations and had to send off the file every time. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, could you please post a link to some information on this technique?

They had printed samples in the ad and the 2 color job looked like a washed out cmyk job, but still VERY good for 2 colors!

That’s a different one, but exactly what I was looking for.

Thanks!

Mark,

Actually, I think you could do the same thing as Powertone manually in Photoshop, but it wouldn’t be as easy as using Powertone. I seem to recall that a new version of Powertone was supposed to come out that could produce separations for two or more inks. You could get some really neat special effects with more than two inks. As I recall, their Silvertone does the same sort of thing, but using metallic inks.
