Photoshop 6.0 closes without error during startup

I’ve had Photoshop 6.0 for years. Recently it will not open — that is, it goes through the opening routine, then suddenly closes without any error message. ImageReady will open just fine, but if I attempt to switch to Photoshop, it starts to initialize, then suddenly disappears, leaving ImageReady open. I have not installed new software that would produce a conflict, I have checked my system for viruses and spyware — nothing seems to have changed except Photoshop. I tried reinstalling it, and the same thing happened. Any ideas? I’m desperate.
