I am trying to share a Photoshop CS layered PSD file with a client that has Photoshop 7. If I save the file with the "maximize compatibility" option, the client is only able to view a single layer file. If I save with compatibility turned off, Photoshop 7 displays a multi-language error message instead of the image. The file in question is not using any CS specific features that weren’t already supported in Photoshop 7.

I was able to gracefully share PSDs between Photoshop 6 and 7. Photoshop 6 would rasterize type layers, but the files were otherwise fine. Am I missing something here? I understand that there are issues sharing files with very old versions, but IMO that should not apply to Photoshop 7.

Thanks,

Robert

I encountered this once. I forgot the layered file was 16-bit…

Does it have a text layer – the text engine was changed in Photoshop CS so this might be the problem you are seeing. If it is, you would have to rasterise the type layer before saving. Your colleague would then be able to view it (but would no longer be able to edit the type). —

Text wouldn’t cause that error.

But a layered 16 bit file would.

Thanks, folks. The problem was indeed with 16 bit layered files. It is easy to forget to convert after acquiring a file from camera RAW.

Thanks,
