Setting your colors?

This is probably one of the dumbest questions you will hear – But for some reason I can see the colors in the picture and on the color window, but everytime I try to paint something on an image or use a colored font, it is only shades of black and white. How do you set up the color for your photoshop and what do I do to get color to show up in my pictures when using paintbrushes and gradients? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

check image> mode and make sure it’s not grayscale or bitmap. should be something like rgb 8 bit or cmyk, etc.

Its not just one photo that is black and white, its all of them. I cant seem to use the colors from the paintbrush or the clone stamp to make any colors other than greys whites and blacks.

ok, then run (or rerun) adobe gamma from the control panel and calibrate your monitor.
