Norton seems to be suspected of causing a few problems with CS – I have Norton Antivirus 2002 running currently with PS CS but the Norton virus definitions subscription is about to run out. I had planned to update to Norton Antivirus 2004 but starting to think just renewing the update subscriptions maybe the safest option. Does anyone run 2004 with CS?

I have nav 2002 running fine w/cs. I renewed my subscriptions a few months ago. Why spend the $$$ on a new program when what you have is fine.

David,

I’d discourage you from upgrading to NAV2004. Why? Well, I tried out the demo and found it to be a serious performance hit on my system. If you have a new, faster system it may be no problem but on my dual 550MHz P3 system, there was significant impact to the speed at which pages loaded in IE6, launching of installation programs, and I’m not sure what else. NAV2004 includes additional scanning of many, and perhaps all executables as they are launched. I’ve not read the details, so it may be limited to "setup.exe", "install.exe", or perhaps ".msi" files. I see some value there, but not enough to stop me from turning off whatever option controls that particular scanning.

I don’t know how NAV2003 differs from 2002, but you can probably find it on sale now that 2004 is also available. I’ve got no complaints with NAV2003….well, other than that it may not like my installation of PS CS. I’m still trying to pin down how true that is.

Regards,

Daryl

It began when I decided to manually check for a new set of definitions, as we got word of one of the numerous worms that began making the rounds in the fall. Norton refused to update, instead giving me a relatively obscure error and a link to their support site…

Situation:
You install Norton AntiVirus 2004 (NAV) and activate the program successfully. However, whenever you restart the computer you are prompted to activate the program again. If you enter the activation code each time, then after a number of restarts you see the message "The trial period has expired. This product has been disabled because you have not activated it."

Solution:
Symantec is investigating this problem. The cause is unknown, and there is no solution at this time. This document will be updated when new information becomes available or a solution is found. "

I upgraded to NAV 2004 to get the new spyware, et al scanning features above and beyond the standard virus scanning in NAV 2002. NAV 2004 increased my CPU usage from around 5-10% idle to around 50-60% idle. Needless to say I reinstalled NAV 2002 and sent Symantec an e-mail voicing my concerns. I won’t put NAV 2004 back on until they address these serious performance issues. I’d say avoid NAV 2004 until they do regardless of what you plan on using on your system.

Thanks for the advice – looks like I will stick with 2002 and update the subscription.
