Here is the answer to a problem I couldn’t find documented anywhere. An excess of fonts installed on your machine (or some bad ones) can cause an error in Acrobat, PhotoShop or PageMaker where some or all of them won’t open and hang your machine and you get an error box siting "cooltype.dll". Oddly, it can effect some of the applications but not others on the same machine. In my case, acrobat reader wouldn’t work at all but PageMaker would run and then throw an error on exit. The answer is to start uninstalling fonts (especially bad ones) in small batches, until there is enough headroom for the Adobe apps to run. This solved all my problems with all Adobe apps.
