When the battery finally quit on the old APC Network Power Cell, I replaced it with one running PowerChute. I have had to inch the upper voltage limit up from the 124 I changed it to, to keep from going onto battery for extended periods of time. (The 1000 unit is only good for 18 minutes with the 19 inch monitor.)

In the two weeks I’ve had it, it has forced a hibernate once and, as of yesterday afternoon, gone onto battery 99 times. Each time it was due to over voltage. I currently have the cut off at 131 volts. As I recall, APC has a default setting of 134, the maximum available. Is that a safe level or do I need to try complaining to the power company?

Is it a viable option to replace the battery in the old UPS and have it feed the new one? This may/should let me lower the over voltage limit a volt or two.

Thank you,
Bill

What is the no load voltage at your wall outlet? A serious overvoltage service from the power company should be causing a lot of other problems like early lighting failure and appliance problems. After you measure the line voltage with a good digital meter, I would give that information to APC and let them give you some suggestions for a course of action. I have had adequate tech support from them in the past.

Utilities commissions require power companies to maintain 122 volts + – 5%. Call the power company and complain.

Gary and Lundberg,

Thank you both. Now to find someone who will loan me a plug into the wall recording digital meter and let it go through a day or two. Without a recorder, it would be difficult to catch a voltage reading spike. If not, I’ll screen copy the information and see if that would be enough to get something done.

I didn’t check the record yesterday, but the 99 switch to battery events had a total of 59 +- minutes with one being the 18 minute "send into hybernation" one.

All I can say is that I’m glad I’m using it.
