I dont know if this is only happening to me. But im running photoshop cs on windows xp and i use the thumbnail view in all of my folders when i used to have photoshop 7 and the thumbnails of the psd files would show up but now that i have upgraded to cs the thumbnails are no longer there they are just little icons of psd’s no more thumbnails. Is there anyway to fix this to get my precious thumbnails back?

I don’t have an answer but just for information mine seem to be showing thumbnails just fine. I have WinXP Home and PSCS.

I have no idea but mine is the exact same way. The only difference being that I am running windows 2000. After "upgrading" from Photoshop 7 to Photoshop CS my explorer previews no longer show up.

From the Photoshop Readme which is in the Photoshop folder on your HDD:

Thumbnail Icons for .psd files

Photoshop CS no longer provides thumbnail icons of .psd files through operating system folder windows. Please use the File Browser to view your ..psd thumbnail files.

I would suggest that a read through the documentation would not come amiss….

Frankly, the file browser is *so* much faster (and the PS icon routine *so* buggy) that I’m glad to kiss thumbnail view in windows goodbye. The file browser rocks.

Thanks, I did not read the readme to find out the change in photoshop CS. However, this deleted feature is terrible. I now have to open a program to determine which file I want to open with that program? As far as slow and buggy, it worked damn well for me and was VERY useful. This feature is enough for me to put photoshop 7 back on and throw photoshop CS out the window. Even my CAD programs will give me part previews before I open the file so that I can be sure it is the correct file to open.

I agree. It should be left up to the user whether to generate thumbs or not. I recall that in previous versions, a "Generate Thumbnails" checkbox existed in the properties dialog of a psd image. I always assumed that one could turn this feature off if necessary, and I wonder why those who found it buggy did not do so. Those of us for whom it worked want it back.

PS:
I have hacked the registry to show the thumbs, but it is maddeningly inconsistent; some files produce thumbs, some do not, with no apparent rhyme or reason. 🙁

These are as copied from PS 6/7 reg files and assume that one of those versions is still installed on your system. Courtesy Dave Milbut; sue him not me if you hose your system. Let me know if ALL of your files saved with CS produce thumbs. Thanks.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4 D}\(Default) = Photoshop Icon Handler (REG_SZ)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4 D}\InProcServer32\(Default) = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell\PSICON.DLL (REG_SZ)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4 D}\InProcServer32\ThreadingModel = Apartment (REG_SZ)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4 D}\MiscStatus\(Default) = (value not set) (REG_SZ)

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0B6DC6EE-C4FD-11d1-819A-00C04FB69B4 D}\MiscStatus\IconBits = 1 (REG_SZ)

Then you need the shellex hive. I’d try copying it from here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.Image.7\shellex

to here:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Photoshop.Image.8\shellex

Do you not read the other messages here Len. I just said that I have PSCS and XP and the psd files show up as thumbnails in both windows explorer and under File>Open within PS. Granted I use File Browser all the time but regardless of what Adobe says, on my computer, PSD file thumbnails show up fine.

Hey! You didn’t include my disclaimer!

Here’s the one from that thread:

STANDARD DISCLAIMER TIME WHEN PLAYING WITH YOUR REGISTRY:

YOU MAY (LIKELY WILL) HOSE YOUR SYSTEM BY MAKING THESE CHANGES UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING, AND EVEN THEN!!!

Back
up your registry before messing with it unless you are a registry god! (Or a fool. There’s no accounting for the luck of the foolish!

<g>)

Blah, blah, blah, don’t sue me.
