I need to knockout the backgrounds from photographs with either Photoshop or Illustrator. And I’m hoping for an easy way (wince).

I can’t have the background just go transparent like I believe is easy to do in Illustrator because I will be e-mailing the cropped photos from a PC to a Mac to use in advertisements. They need these photos ready to drop into the ads.

Here’s hoping there’s help out there,
Diane

Two PS helpers in selecting objects:
corel’s knockout www.corel.com
extensis mask pro www.extensis.com
I’ve tried them both and can not see much difference between the two, but they do work better than PS extraction command in my opinion.
I still prefer the quick mask/brush or the pen tool to create a path. BLUDVLZ "plugin: Corel’s Knockout 2 or Extensis’ Mask Pro 3" 11/26/03 7:01am </cgi-bin/webx?14/0>
is another thread on these programs.

Or just use Photoshop’s Extract tool/filter.

And you’ll probably need to make the image transparent, then put it over a solid color background.

Corel’s Knockout is pretty decent, but it has a fairly significant learning curve before you’ll get the best out of it.

Likewise, Extensis Mask Pro can also give you good results, but stepping up from "OK" results to really good results will take a bit of practice.

Another tool is "Ultimatte Advantage" from the guys. This is essentially a Photoshop plug-in version of the same chromakey software for which they won an Academy Award a few years ago.

It’s a bit more expensive than the other two packages, but a beginner can get really decent results in just a minute or two. And if you’re willing to put the time in to learn everything, the program is quite sophisticated.

Other than the price, the main downside is that it’s a bit of a memory hog. Don’t even think about using it with less than 1gb, and I’d recommend maxing out your machine if possible.
