What do I adjust to allow Internet Explorer to find my help file? Lately I’ve been getting an error instead of taking me to the folder.

Denise,

I’m very curious to learn what sort of error you’ve seen since I seem to have been the only one reporting such problems here in the forum. Don’t bother reinstalling everything…I’ve already done that, to no avail. Here are a few questions to answer if you will:

1. Firstly, is this with Photoshop CS?

2. What O/S are you running?

3. What version of IE are you using?

4. What is the error you’re seeing? Is there any error message?

5. Is the problem arising with every instance of accessing PS Help or is it random?

6. If the problem seems random, could you try opening and closing PS Help a few times (5-10 times) and then perform an Open or New command to see if that then reports an error?

7. If duplicating the problem is relatively easy and if you have another browser available on your system (Netscape or Mozilla), would you try changing your default browser to one of them to see if they too cause problems when PS Help is launched from Photoshop?

8. What, if any utility packages and/or anti-virus applications do you use? My experience is these don’t matter, but I may be wrong.

I’m running PS CS on a WinXP Pro system, and have seen instances of error messages as well as cases of nothing but PS CS aborting immediately. Commonly, while it may appear that PS Help can be successfully accessed and closed, moving off to Open a file or create a New file will result in errors that cannot be resolved without shutting down and reopening PS CS, unless it aborts on its own. My experience is that the problems are independent of the default browser. I have seen these problems on a clean installation of Windows XP where no other software was installed apart from PS CS.

More details on what I’ve been going through troubleshooting the problem are in several other threads, but the one at "PS CS: Random Crashes Persist after Clean System Rebuild" 12/2/03 7:23pm </cgi-bin/webx?13/0> is perhaps the best to reference if you care to.

Good luck resolving the problem!

Mine will not find it either – I have to manually go to the folder and double-click to launch it.

When I use F1 or Help > Photoshop Help, it tries to launch this URL: http://%1%20" file:///C:/Program%20Files/Adobe/Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS/Help /help.html"

which is an invalid URL; changing it to:
file://C:\Program%20Files\Adobe\Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS\Help\ help.html

(removing the third slash after "file:" and eliminating "http://%1%20" altogether) resolves the problem.

Brian,

The third slash is perfectly normal in a file URL – you shouldn’t need to delete that. Starneg about the leading "http:// CTRL-A SPACE though"

Brian,

While I may be wrong, I interpreted Denise’s question based upon the problems I’ve seen…the problem may well NOT be one of being unable to find the Photoshop help file so much as it is of something simply going awry in Photoshop such that the default HTML browser is never launched for viewing the help files. While it has been a more rare occurrence, I have seen instances where selecting PS Help did nothing at all. In such cases, a subsequent effort to select PS Help would typically kill PS altogether. The more common situation I’ve seen is that PS Help will occasionally open while at other times it either immediately kills PS or else it reports an error, the messages varying between and "R6025 Pure Virtual Function Call" or an "Could not complete your request due to a program error".

Once Denise elaborates more on the nature of the error she’s seeing, perhaps then we can more correctly identify what is or isn’t happening.

Regards,

Daryl

Ok guys, for example: click help button> Click Specific help option> Internet Explorer opens and displays- file:///C:/Program%20Files/Adobe/Adobe%20Photoshop%20CS/Help /1_1_9_5.html%22
(I chose How To Work With Type>Drop Shadow in PSCS)> Action Cancelled error msg saying-Internet Explorer was unable to link to the Web page you requested. The page might be temporarily unavailable. Then goes on with advice-Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you have visited this page previously and you want to view what has been stored on your computer, click File, and then click Work Offline.

For information about offline browsing with Internet Explorer, click the Help menu, and then click Contents and Index.

I have read somewhere that this is due to some browser setting but at the time wasn’t having any problem and now can’t remember where I saw this.

Hi Denise,

Well, it seems I did read too much into your problem.

I don’t see that same problem arising for me when I select one of the How-To topics. All I know to suggest is that it may be due to your security settings possibly filtering out a Java, Javascript, or ActiveX action. You might try checking your security settings in the Tools > Internet Options dialog of IE. Mine are currently at the default setting of Medium. If yours are higher or if you have customized your settings, then you may want to compare them against the default settings for Medium to see what differs. Or, simply choose Medium to see if that eliminates the problem.

Good luck,

Daryl

Daryl,

Thank you – I have been all over Internet Explorer and changed settings from this to that and back and nothing. After reading your post I opened up Netscape 7.1, checked the security settings and set it to be the one to open html and, WA-LA!, my help is now working through Netscape.

Sincerely,

Denise
