Hello,

I recently purchased Photoshop 7.0 for my Windows XP system. It is the first Photoshop program I have purchased, and there is no Adobe software on my computer. All system requirements are met.

However, I cannot install the program. In some cases, only 99% of InstallShield will load, and then the computer locks up. In other cases, the Install program loads, but installation is terminated by an error with 2%, 6%, or 11% of installation complete.

I have tried closing all programs, installing after booting with no Startup programs loading, and installing in Safe Mode, and the problem persists. I’ve defragmented, scanned for errors and viruses, etc.

I know the Photoshop 7.0 CD-ROM I have is not to blame, because I test-installed on my office PC and it went fine.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Peter,

Try copying the whole of the Photoshop folder tree from the CD to your HDD and try installing from there.

Unfortunately, this did not work — I copied all files over, but still had an error. I think it is a software conflict issue; are there any non-Adobe programs known to impact Photoshop processes?

Anything that says "Norton" on it.

Peter,

I’m a little concerned that you say "the whole computer locks up". If that is so (CTRL+ALT+DEL fails to bring up the task manager), then it indicates a hardware or BIOS problem. An application (even an installer) can’t bring down the whole system under XP or Win2k

I also note you say you purchased 7 recently. Are you aware that if you bought ps7 after sept 29 2003 you can get a free (shipping cost only) upgrade to PS CS? call adobe customer support if you fall into this catagory. I think you have until the end of december to call.

"Whole computer locks up" is a misstatement on my part. Only the InstallShield locks up at 99%. The last few tries, InstallShield loads, but installation gets an error message as above.

empty out your temp directory first (important). copy the photoshop folder from the cd to the desktop. turn off any norton utilities you might be running. run setup from there.

Dave,

Read the initial posting:

"I have tried closing all programs, installing after booting with no Startup programs loading, and installing in Safe Mode, and the problem persists. I’ve defragmented, scanned for errors and viruses, etc."

How long has it been since you’ve run a Check Disk? Get the Properties for the drive, go to the Tools page, click the Check Now button, and make sure Fix Automatically is checked. The OS will make you reboot. If things are acting really wierd, then a surface scan may be in order as well, but that will take at least an hour, so be prepared.

len, i did read it. it doesn’t say anything about emptying out his temp files, unless that’s "etc." 🙂

Dave,

It was the "Turn off Norton" I was commenting on – He’s already tried from Safe Mode……
