I have created a multichannel file (2 PMS colours) and saved it as a PS DCS 2.0 EPS file, single file with colour composite.

But I am only offered a 72dpi option (single file with colour composite (72dpi)), which means that when the file is then imported in QuarXpress, it prints as a very low resolution looking file.

How do I solve this problem – Am I doing something wrong? I am using PS7.0 for Windows.

Thanks

DCS files must be printed as separations – when you print composite you will only get the preview (which, as you noticed, is 72ppi, and is not using your spot colors either).

One way to get around this (for very basic, non-critical proofing only):

1.) Go to Image Size and change the resolution of the image to 72ppi – MAKE SURE RESAMPLE IMAGE IS UNCHECKED.

2.) Save the file (BTW I recommend always using the multiple file option).

3.) Place the image into your layout and reduce to 24% – this will raise the effective resolution of the image back to 300ppi, and since the preview image was created from your 72ppi original the preview resolution is increased as well.

Now, keep in mind that this is just a preview image, so even using this trick it will not print as high-quality as the real image will when printed as seps – Photoshop just isn’t trying to make a usable preview image, because that’s now how DCS files are meant to be used.

Hope this helps!

So am I hearing you guys right? I certainly hope so! I’ve been struggling with this.

If I save a file as a DSC 2.0 and click the option "multiple files" (NOT With COMPOSITE) my image will be high resolution when it is placed in Quark! I can’t print separations right now to test them. I’m hopeing to give a file to the printer that is correct.

When is it better to select "single file?"

Kathi,

Make the file multiple file WITH colour composite, 8-bit TIFF preview and ASCII Encoding. that will separate correctly.

Bear in mind too that you must give the printer the DCS files and Quark document. You CANNOT give the printer any kind of composite file, including a PDF.

Be sure the printer understands what you have done, as the printer may well start by making a PDF. Above all, never assume all printers want or need the same thing – they don’t, so it is wise and proper to ask. Arguably you shouldn’t even start preparation until you know what the printer can accept.
