I am running Windows 98 and Photoshop 5.5, and have been struggling with the above problem since before July 23 2003, when I posted a response to a similar posting by Deere Cindy on June 24th.,
I was given some well meaning advice, but it was beyond my ability to implement, and as suggested, I have now asked another, who is Windows literate to try to solve the problem, and he tells me that I am correct, in that the solution offered does not work on my set up. He says the advice relates to Windows 2000 or XP. Can Dave Millbut or anyone else out there, help me once more?

Can you be more specific.

Save For Web has a built in bug that Adobe hasn’t fixed since it’s introduction in Photoshop 5.5. It truncates file names at 29 characters even though it shows you the correct file name in the Save box. Might that be your problem?

Thanks for your interest.
My file names show up in my folders correctly and in full, but sometimes, and sometimes only, when opening the files, and /or saving them, they are truncated to 8 characters. An example would be "Robinson Crusoe Dec 1954" would show as "Robins~1" , in other words limited to 8 characters. This phenomena occurred suddenly, and I don’t know what I did to enable it, or more importantly, how to get everything to revert to showing the full name in the title bar.It does NOT always truncate, but usually.

Charles:

You haven’t been accessing the files with some other software have you?

This form of filename is the "compatibility" notation used by older software that could only handle 8.3 filenames [those were the days!]. Some older programs would mess up filenames in this way.

I have occasionally opened jpeg. and Tiff. files , using both/either Paintshop or Imaging, if I happen to be in one or another of those applications for some other reason. Could this be my problem?

Charles:

Could be. Try it. Find a JPEG and make a copy with a "proper" filename. Open it and save a few times with PS and see if it’s OK. If it is, try open/save with each of the other programs in turn. After each test, go back to PS.

If this is the case, your version of the other software is to blame and might be worth updating.
