I am wondering why the scratch sizes are so large when opening a file and vary with the alloted RAM given to Photoshop
Here are some values from the ‘scratch size info’ when opening the same file. The percents are the RAM allocated to Photoshop and the others numbers are the resultant sizes.
I have also included my system info.

10%=62M/44M
40%=102M/180M
65%=173M/293M
80%=173M/361M
100%=173M/451M

Well first off, you’re running your image cache at 6, the highest which will substantially increase scratch disk sizes. . . and you don’t indicate what you’ve set your History states to, going beyond the default 20 will also drive up scratch sizes.

Personally, I would think your machine is way ram starved. . .512mb is extremely low.

I realize 512 isnt huge. The point I am trying to make is that…An image opened in PS 7 was around 45M not 160+ as it is in CS. (I think I failed to state the version I am using) My settings are the same now as with the previous version and I am reaching 1+G in a hurry.
The more ram I give it…the more it takes?? Isn’t the file the same size regardless of the available ram??

Sean,

No. The more RAM allocated the larger the scratch will be as you have found.

If you do a forum search you will find Chris Cox (one of the Photoshop engineers) has gone into this in some depth within the last week.
