I am looking at some consumer electronics advertising in which about a dozen images are displayed on an 8.5×11 page. It appears layered. The background is red. The electronics items appear to have been photographed separately and then merged into the final display.

Before moving the pictures to the final display, it appears that they were able to eliminate all background.

I would like to do the same. The question is: "If I photograph the item, how can I eliminate the background from the picture?"

The easiest way is to use a background light to blow it out to as white as you can get it. When bringing the image into Photoshop, do a selection on the background and either use the Paint Brush or Fill to make it white. That will give you the subject floating on a white background.

Len,

Having opened your image, rename the background layer in the layers palette to something other than "Background"

You can then use a combination of the selection tools in Photoshop to select your background, and delete it. Save As PSD and Place that in Illustrator (which is where you want them according to your other post in the Illustrator forum), and they will retain the transparent background.

If you want to do your compositing in Photoshop, having opened each image and deleted the background, open a new document with transparent base of a suitable size to hold all the individual images, and at the same image resolution as your product shots. You can then drag the layer from each product shot layer palette into the image window of the new document. Each product will then be on its own layer and you can move them around to your heart’s content.
