In every version of Photoshop I have used (down to 4.0), the "save as copy" option added the word "copy" to the file name. Version 8.0 no longer does this, but wants to replace the original image file! Luckily, I have only said yes once to an image that was not that important. I have searched for some preference setting that I might have missed but can find nothing. What am I missing, or has Photoshop changed this option?

Copy now only gets appended if you are in danger of overwriting a file with the same name and extension. Unfortunately, this logic fails if you go into the Save As dialog and then choose As a Copy. The workaround is to use the Save As a Copy shortcut to bring up the Save As dialog with the As a Copy check box already checked on. The shortcut is Ctrl + Alt + S.
