I’m trying to erase some background imaging from an image for a t-shirt transfer. However, after I looked at tool presets for the eraser, the eraser tool no longer works. PS THINKS the eraser is doing something because I can run the eraser around my image (and it doesn’t APPEAR to be doing anything), click Edit, and I have the option to |Undo Eraser. I click that, and nothing appears to change. Someone over in the CS forum said to make sure I had the correct layer selected. Someone else told me I had to ask my question here. Being a Photoshop neophyte, I have no real idea what that means, but I check the |Layer menu option and see nothing that I believe will make a difference. Does anyone have any ideas what I’ve done wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Which layer are you trying to erase on? Is it the background [bottom] layer?

I don’t know. If I’m thinking correctly, it is both back- and fore-ground. The image is of my family seated around a table at an outdoor café. I am erasing everything behind us and the table. I have almost all of what is behind us erased and most of the table gone. But, like I said, I clicked on the "Tool Presets" button in the main window and now I no longer can erase. I hope this helps.

Since I only have PS 7, I don’t know if CS has any presets for the Eraser tool [PS 7 doesn’t]. I can’t follow that up any more.

Look at the status bar at the top of the screen. Is Mode "normal" and Opacity and Flow both 100%?

BTW, if your goal is to isolate you and the family and the table from the background in the image, this is not a good way to do it.

You need to look at selection tools and copy to a new layer. The Extract "filter" may be worth a try too.

Look at the Options bar – What do you have in the Mode setting and the Opacity setting? Is the airbrush symbol in the options bar on a grey or white background?

Gee, it really looks like i need to read these manuals and stuff I got. I honestly have almost no idea what you guys are talking about. I did happen to solve the problem by sheer luck alone: I tried Merge Visible under Layer and bingo, it works again. Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it. And I promise I will read my manuals and pdf training books before I write in again.

If you keep that promise, you’ll be a very welcome visitor here. 🙂

BTW, I haven’t a clue what was broken for you, but I’m glad you’re sorted.

Since "merge visible" solved it, you were obviously on the wrong layer. Look on the menu "Windows", and select "Layer Palette", then highlight background layer.

BTW, I agree that this isn’t the good way to do this: your’e bypassing 99% of PS’s capabilities.

Good luck.
