Photoshop file locations

Hi there

In the corporate IT environment in which I work there are strict limits on the size of your "profile" – under win2k, this includes most of the contents of \documents and settings\USERNAME\.

Most Adobe applications save a large amount of data to this area – the biggest problem culprits are distiller (font cache, some config bits) and especially Photoshop. In addition to its preferences and various other files, the file browser appears to save its cache data into folders within the profile area.

Is there any way I can configure CS to use a different location for this stuff? I don’t care if it breaks multi-user functionality…no-one should be using my machine, and if they do they don’t need to be mucking about with PS! At present I can’t even log off…and I’ve begged, bribed and blackmailed the IT staff to no avail – they can’t/won’t increase my profile allocation.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Keith

In’t this their problem?

If your employer wants you to work with PS and, at the same time denies you the resources for that kind of work then there is much to be desired IMHO.

I agree w/Rob. Time to escalate beyond your neanderthal IT staff. Speak to your management to have him/her speak with IT management. I understand the need for rules and limits in a corporate enviornment, but the no-help-desk (helpless-desk) needs to realize that when the rules interfere with business there ARE exceptions. (And there are ALWAYS exceptions.)

Keith,

That’s where Microsoft say user-specific data HAS to be stored. Your IT staff need to be made aware of this fact.

Beat up on your IT department (and Microsoft!), because there is nothing you or Adobe can do about it….

Ok, ok, so his IT department bites. Who’s doesn’t? 😉

Keith,

One thing that can make your life easier is TweakUI for Windows XP. Get the PowerToys for XP from Microsoft’s site and install this great little tool. One of the panels in TweakUI is My Compters / Special Folders. Select My Documents from the popup and select a location outside of your user profile tree, somewhere on your local drive. Since My Documents is where all logo-compliant apps are supposed to point to when saving a new document, this should help you keep your profile clean.

You may need to reboot in order for all applications to see this change.

Scott, you don’t need tweakui to change the My Documents location, just right-click > Properties on the Start menu My Documents icon and select Move…

Scott – thanks for the tip, but I don’t think that will work. The location of stuff like that is apparently set by group policy and would just be reset the next time I logged on. Which would probably break everything _else_.

And sadly, whilst its easy to say "make IT change it", its just not going to work. The only way I can have a machine which is nonstandard (from an OS setup PoV) is if it never connects to the network. Which would be the biggest PITA ever – at one point I did have a pair of machines as I was also doing some app development and needed a completely standard box to test on. Just managing that was a pest…

I’ll have to go registry-hunting and see if I can find a way to force PS/ID to save files elsewhere…

Thanks

Don’t bother. You can’t. It’s wired into the program – it’s part of being logo-compliant on Windows. Moving your My Documents directory is probably your best shot. Give it a try. It’s also your best bet for getting IT to bend a little. Anthough they clearly didn’t understand the ramifications of roaming profiles :-).

So I saw…

It looks like I’m going to have to go back to my former hobby of moaning, whinging and nagging…thanks for your help – if nothing else, when I get desperate I can always send the IT guys a link to this thread… 😉

Cheers
