I have all PCs on my network and am running a 1.5TB NAS cabinet for image storage. Photoshop seems to open images almost a minute or two slower off this cabinet than off of my 500GB server on the same network. Have noticed big slowdowns like this back in PHotoshop 5 and 6 days and I was told by Adobe they don’t support working across a network. Which I found, and still find to be completely ridiculous (laughable actually), there is no way that our high volume professional lab could drag each image we work on in a day to the local computer. I’m still with PS 7.0 experiencing slowdowns off the NAS cabinet, but not off of the server. Seems it has problems with large volumes. Is this still an issue and has it been addressed in CS at all?

First of all, why is it ridiculous to assume that it would take longer to open a file across a network than from a local drive?

But to answer your question, there were some issues with drives larger than 1TB that were fixed in PS CS, but I don’t know the details. This was discussed a while back so you might want to search the forum a bit.

ok…read the post again.

I didn’t say it was ridiculous to assume that opening a file across a network would take longer than on a local drive. I said it was ridiculous for Adobe to think that everyone had time in high volume situations to drag each image to thier local drive. Also I said if i open a image off the server (also a network drive) it takes mere seconds compared to upwards of 2 minutes off the NAS cabinet (also a network drive).

Jon,

Photoshop CS supports working across the network using Version Cue.

There are just too many combinations, any number of which can really corrupt files being moved across at the intensity Photoshop is driving the file system at. This isn’t to say it can’t be done – if you think you’ve got it all set up and stable, go for it. It’s just not supported – any file corruption reported while saving across a network will probably be put into the "network did it" bin, especially if certain NOSes or protocols are involved.

As for the difference between the two servers, who knows? I know that’s not a great answer, but again, with networks there are just too many variables to try and account for them all. The performance profile with Photoshop CS will probably be different, and it certainly deals with large file systems better.
