Paint Brush will only paint gray

Help, Sometimes when I go to use the paint brush it will only paint gray or maybe it is painting away the color but it is very frustrating. Even rebooting the program does not help. any suggestions

you may have to convert your file to RGB or CMYK in the image>mode> drop down.
