how do I get an image straight black and white? the grayscale can get in the way of using the paint bucket to color an image….

After you convert to greyscale (and optionally use Image > Adjustments > Threshold), go to Image > Mode > Bitmap.

Tyler seems to need to color a grayscale image thus he needs to stay in RGB mode.
