Hi everyone,

I’m wondering if it is possible to convert a .art graphic to a .gif graphic in PhotoShop 4.0 LE? Thanks.

Lisa,

No, I don’t believe it will. Aren’t .art files vector?

I think .art files are an AOL proprietary thing, aren’t they?

Hmm…What is the source and/or generating application for these files with the "*.art" extension?

I see many possibilities HERE <http://www.icdatamaster.com/a.html>.

ART = America Online image
ART = Another Ray Tracer image
ART = Art Director image
ART = Artisan image format
ART = Canon Crayola art file
ART = Clipart; Central Point Scrapbook
ART = Mime: image/x-jg
ART = MS Internet Explorer picture format in internet-cache ART = PFS: First Publisher image
ART = Vort imageART = Xara Studio image
ART3 = (MAC CREATOR CODE) Illustrator 3 (PC ext: AI)
ART3 = (MAC FILE_TYPE) Illustrator
ART5 = (MAC CREATOR CODE) Illustrator 5 and later
ART5 = (MAC FILE_TYPE) Illustrator
ARTF = (MAC FILE_TYPE) FreeHand Xtra
ARTY = (MAC CREATOR CODE) Illustrator 1
ARTZ = (MAC CREATOR CODE) Illustrator 88
ARTZ = (MAC FILE_TYPE) Illustrator 88

I just know they don’t show up under File -> Open even if the full Photoshop. I seem to recall .ART files that were vector clip art. I don’t use them for anything though.

Lisa,

What are you using them for? If you can view them @ 100% you can always do a screen capture and convert it to a GIF.

When you visit a Web site using CompuServe or American Online own GUI images on the page are compressed into a proprietary format called ART. The online services do this to save space on their
servers and to speed up loading times, but there are some drawbacks. The compressed images don’t look nearly as good as the originals. When you save these images from AOL or CompuServe, they’re saved in ART format (even though the file extension might even read GIF or JPEG on the Mac). Windows users can view and convert ART files using Internet Explorer 4.0 or later. To convert, open the ART file in IE, right-click on it, select "Save Picture As" and choose BMP in the "Save as type" box. Then save the file. The resulting BMP file can be converted to JPEG or GIF another graphics application. According to AOL, there are no Macintosh
programs that can convert the ART format into a more common form. You can require CompuServe and AOL to use standard graphics formats. In Windows, select WWW in Preferences, click the Web Graphics tab and uncheck "Use compressed graphics". On the Mac, select WWW in Preferences and uncheck "Use compressed images". Web pages might load a bit slower, but the images will be a lot clearer and easier to share.

I wonder if anyone has charged AOL under the DMCA for modification of copyrighted material. Technically they are opening your file and modifying it for profit (lowered bandwidth costs) at your expense. I think that would be a fun case for the courts now wouldn’t it. It is about time the little guy fights back. Now all we need is a web site and a class action law suite. 🙂

I remember reading something about this somewhere. The bottom line was that CONTENT was not being changed, but only DELIVERY. Something like that.
