Photoshop CS crashes on startup

On my system (HP Pavilion laptop, 512MB, Windows XP home), I cannot get Photoshop CS to start correctly. It launches and shows the main application Window. After a few seconds, a dialog comes up which says "Adobe Photoshop could not complete the operation because of a program error". This is followed by the Microsoft Windows XP crash dialog with its "Send error report to Microsoft" button.

I’ve tried pressing CTRL+ALT+SHIFT at startup and deleting the preference file. I’ve also uninstalled and reinstalled. The behaviour remains the same.

Any help with debugging this will be much appreciated.

Does it list a specific file in the error? Otherwise, Remove any 3rd party themes for your OS. One user on the forum reported that just switching back to the classic windows theme fixed the problem.

What is the splash screen displaying when it crashes? There are FAQs for several of the messages.
