After installing PhotoShop CS and removing PhotoShop 7 I no longer see images of PSD files in the Microsoft Internet Explorer. I reinstalled PhotoShop CS after removing PhotoShop 7 and that didn’t fix the problem.

the dll that showed the thumbnails was removed from cs as it caused problems for many people. If you want them you should reinstall 7.

Yes, that is true PSIcon.dll for PS 7 is very unstable. It frequently crashes and crashes Internet Explorer. It is not very usable. Adobe was supposed to fix it in the next release, I didn’t expect them to remove it. That is no way to fix a problem!

James,

That is no way to fix a problem!

It would seem that it is. Your system is more stable isn’t it 🙂

FYI, I did a google search on this issue and this explanation was given by an Adobe engineer a couple of years ago:
"psicon.dll generates large thumbnails for PSD files and shows Photoshop File Info information in Explorer for PSD files in Windows Explorer. The code in psicon.dll is run by Windows Explorer and as part of its operation, psicon.dll opens the file to generate the thumbnail and get the File Info data. Unlike previous Windows versions, XP and sometimes 2K can yank control from psicon.dll without giving psicon.dll an opportunity to close the file before Windows Explorer sends the file off to be opened by Photoshop."

If this indeed is the problem (and it sounds plausible) then there may not be much that Adobe can do about it.

We tried very hard to do something about it. Nothing worked. It was too much of a headache to continue on with it.

We’ll see if we can’t revisit this in some future version.

Scott,

I spend several months reporting this problem under PhotoShop 7 last winter. I even got a second level Microsoft support person involved who trapped the error with a debugger. Microsoft was very interested in getting this problem fixed and offered to help. In all cases it was a Windows call being made with an invalid handle. I would see problems when I had a browser window open and saved a file from PhotoShop which would cause the thumbnail to update.

I was told at that time that it would be fixed in the next version. CS is the next version.

Not having thumbnails in the Place window in InDesign makes that window useless.

First, this is the Photoshop (please note the spelling) forum, not the InDesign forum.

Second, I’m really not sure what you’re talking about.
It sounds like it might be related, but doesn’t sound like anything reported to us by customers or Microsoft.

You’re joking, I hope

For his most recent message (#7), no, that’s not a joke.

The problems with psicon.dll were not a "call being made with an invalid handle".

And the only thing we’ve promised is to kill psicon.dll.

Gotcha, the inaccurate description of the problem and the claim that it was going to be fixed was what you took issue with. I misread your intent.

Chris,

I assure you Adobe tech support told me that PSICON.DLL would be fixed in the next release. They never said it was being discontinued. They made me and the Microsoft second level support person jump through all these hoops to reproduce the problem. We send sample folders of PSD files and procedures to reproduce the problem several times. We would see the problem when we opened a folder of PSD files, that is Explorer would crash. I also assure that Microsoft traced PSICON.DLL when it crashed and the last thing PSICON.DLL did before it crashed was pass Windows an invalid file handle.

JPG, NEF, TIFF, and other picture file formats have DLL’s that work and I just can’t understand why Adobe can’t provide a PSICON.DLL that works. If Adobe is throwing away PSICON.DLL then why not email me the source code and between me and my contact at Microsoft I guarantee you we can get it fixed.

I have a visual of that vein on Chris’ head exploding right about now. Not a pretty sight. 😉
