I will be installing CS on a campus server over the holidays–these machines are going to be reimaged with a clean install of XP, but I have read that there are installation problems with CS and servers, especially regarding Version Cue. Any pointers you could give would be helpful since my IT people at the college DO NOT understand how PS works and cannot help me with any installation problems. (They can’t figure out how to do a custom install…let alone troubleshoot.)We may have to call Adobe for activation of the PSCS licence under TLP, but I want to know what problems I should be looking for during install.

Systems:

Dell P4
512 RAM
Hard drives are locked off except for a small thawspace using Deep Freeze Pro. All files are run off the servers and hosted back to the server. (Which I cannot give you specs for because the IT people won’t tell me what they are using…(evil IT secret!)

Will be doing a full install of CS Suite; PS, Illy, ID, Acrobat, GoLive and installing old version of LiveMotion (still better than flash) and ATM.

Thanks!

CLP versions don’t require activation, but I’m not sure about TLP. And as far as running Photoshop on a server, it’s not supported. It needs to be installed on each machine it is going to be run on.

Christine – You’re headed for a world of pain.

As Mark said – you can’t install Photoshop on a server, it needs to be installed locally (preferences and saved files can be on the server, which is what most schools do).

And you can’t have a "small" amount of local disk space – because the scratch disk MUST be local.

Yes, it’s clear that your IT people haven’t even tried to run Photoshop (and probably have trouble getting both oars in the water). It’s also clear that they haven’t tried to run a lot of other common applications that have very similar requirements. (Illustrator and InDesign will have the same problems)

Thanks for the help–This is how we have done it in the past-hand installed to all machines!

However–they want to know if we can "push an image" to the 25 machines that we have licences for?

They will be giving me a larger thaw space per your recommendations! Thank you Adobe gurus!

Yes, you can push copy the binaries – as long as you have a license manager or only install it on the licensed number of machines.

And the best "thaw" space would be all free space on the local disks (which I hope have a few dozen Gig available).

Trust me I am very careful about which machines my TLP licences are installed to and IT has to clear installation of any Adobe product with both myself and the chair.

What we have a problem with is that my chair and my lead instructor do not understand TLP/CLP licencing (especially since Multimedia classes have moved from the CIS chair to the ART chair.) The licences for MGD were all placed under the TLP program by the CIS chair when we had to rebuy the licences (we did not have maintenance agreements in place due to a misunderstanding of the word "maintenance" by the head of the IT department at the time), as this seemed to be the most cost effective option for the MGD department. However, the college does have some licences outside of the MGD department that were bought either as individual licences or not put under a maintenance agreement.

What the ART department does not understand is that licences not under TLP do not receive maintenance (upgrades for the 2 year period) and that all licences should be rebought under TLP/CLP. And that maintenance can be repurchased for the TLP licences past the 2 year agreement, and that it is important to keep repurchasing the maintenance agreements to keep our Adobe licences current. Any ideas to pass along to get the ART department on track with TLP/CLP licencing would be great!

Also is there any way to consolidate the old licences and place them under TLP/CLP (not sure if we have the points to make CLP a possibility.)or do we have to rebuy new licences and add TLP at the time of purchase?

EEEEK.

Yeah, you’ll need to talk to an Adobe sales rep.
You’re WAY into licensing areas that I don’t understand.
