I wonder if someone could clarify where I stand … I am going to write an application (in VB) which will be supplied information from an Intranet. In turn the VB application will use Photoshop (as an ActiveX) to open images and perform a set or pre-defined actions. Can I get away with one licence for Photoshop or will I need a server licence (if there is such a thing) ?

Also, the action will remove any LZW compression from images (if present). With most applications the programmatic use of LZW is limited due to licence implications from Unisys as you’d need their LZW licence which runs at $5000 per year.

Whether you reply here or (preferably) to my email , any relevant information would be appreciated.

You might be better off contacting Adobe’s legal department on this one. This is a user-to-user forum and mostly what you will get here are conjecture. Most of us are artists, not lawyers. :~)

Based on Photoshop CS being more of a machine license it may be ok as long as all the processing is being done by the machine that Photoshop is installed on.

You could also look at this in the same way you would Acrobat printers where you need a license for each user.

At any rate viol8ion is correct and you should contact Adobe directly.

For Acrobat you either need a licence per user that is capable of accessing the copy on the server, which on an open network will be everyone, or you need a server licence.

Thanks for the advice, everyone.

I will contact Adobe and see what they have to say on the matter

Sean…

Don’t expect relevant advice from the first CSR you talk to at Adobe. This is an issue that will, by necessity, require a kick up to second— or third—tier support.

I’ve done artwork FOR lawyers. Does that count? 🙂
