placing and/or opening .eps and .ai files

I use Photoshop only rarely. My understanding from reading the help file is that I should be able to open or place an .ai or .eps file in Photoshop but it isn’t letting me do either. When I try to open an .ai or .eps file Photoshop says it can’t recognize the file extension. When I try to place an .ai or .eps file it says "the parser module cannot parse the file."

What am I doing wrong?

What application is generating the EPS/Ai files? EPS comes in many flavours and by no means all of them follow the PostScript definitions properly…..
