A bug is something that can be easily reproduced. What you have is a system problem.

My computer does the same thing. However, I am not sure if it has to be zoomed in…
When I use the magic wand and do several selections, especially finner selections, the program crashes.
I attributed this to a very buggy PS-CS release which seems to run very slow, like it is debating over every command. However, after my initial install which crashed allot, I did a complete reformat and reinstall of everything, updating drivers, and cutting out the unnecessary applications.
Still it crashes and is extremly slow, expecially compared to PS7. The magic wand crashes so often that I save before using the tool.
My System Spec:

I am having exactly the same problem. Photoshop locks up, not the entire system. The error occurs whether I’m using the paint bucket tool, the magic wand tool, or Select > Color Range.
This is reproducible, for me:
1) Create new image, 14px WIDE by 400px HIGH, filled with the background color, 72 px/in resolution.
2) Select paint bucket tool (tolerance level doesn’t matter).
3) Click anywhere in the image to replace the background color with the foreground color.
4) Error occurs: "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
5) Click the OK button, but Photoshop remains locked up. The application has to be killed via the Task Manager.
* ** HOWEVER, this error does NOT occur if I create the initial image at 400px WIDE by 14px HIGH, then proceed with the paint bucket tool. That works just fine. ***
So that’s what I’m doing – creating the 400×14 image, then rotating it 90 degrees.
Seems to me like a Photoshop bug and not a system error.

Just to clarify, can you reproduce this with only one particular file?…or does it happen with any? Can I get the exact steps from you please? File type, size, zoom percentage, settings of tool, etc. I’ve yet to reproduce this, but will continue trying. Thanks, Bryan.

It occurs when creating a brand new image (no file opened), as well as with existing .psd files.
– No file type is necessary.
– Important image size information was posted above.
– It happened at 100% and 200% zoom (only two levels I tried). – The paint bucket settings are as follows:
Fill: Foreground
Mode: Normal
Opacity: 100%
Tolerance: 10
Anti-Alias checked
Contiguous: checked
All Layers: not checked
As Bob stated, it could be associated with the use of dual Xeons. But it seems like Adobe would still want to figure out a solution to the problem, right?
Dual Xenons here, but no program error using the steps above. Has to be something else.
Both of my systems do this, but both are dual Xeons, the older is Xeon 2.0 GHz with 400 bus. The newer is 533 buss with HT. I would think that at least the older dual system would be fine. Again the older does not have Hyper threading, yet it experiences the same problems as my newer system. Maybe I should try my laptop.
The lock up is not consistent with a procedure for me, except that it does center around the magic wand tool. I can be zoomed in or zoomed out, and the with different file sizes. I have seen this while working on a standard wallpaper dimensions as well as a photo at 4096×6368.
I have used many of adobe’s products, including PS7 which had no problems for me. It would seem odd that PS has issues with dual systems? Except for "Zareh" and "MarkATS" who has not yet posted thier Video Sard specs (hint!) we are also using nVidia. I have the latest drivers that I recently updated hoping to fix this problem.
Not to distract from the main issue here, but just in case it is related, I still feel PS-CS is significant slower than PS-7.

Okay, but does he use nVidia in the dual system that he says has no problems? It is not necessarily important where he works, but what system specs he works with in hope of finding a common situation.

The Error that I am getting is:
"Could not complete your request because of a program error."
I click the okay, the program freezes for a bit and then I get the winXP dialog to send an error report to M$ that says:
"Adobe Photoshop CS has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
Then the program finishes its crash.
I, as I have said, saved my file before it crahes by using the magic wand because it is that predictable.
Its an ATI Radeon 7000 series card. I don’t think we have a machine here with an nVidia card, but I’ll poke around.
Vey Cool. Maybe there is a driver issue? I am grasping at straws. I can only hint at the number of times it crashed today, and each time was with the magic wand tool.
Its funny to me how when one thing is fixes, it can provide solutions across the board, and who knows, maybe will fix my lost in speed performance.
Okay, my hope are getting high, need to slow my roll.

Are you telling me that nobody at adobe has an nvidia video card? I know that nVidia maybe a small company, but I figure you would have heard of them.
On a more serious note, I did turn off Hardware Acceleration an the problem still persisted. I am using the latest referenced drivers, and while I had the previous driver, Photoshop still had the problem.

at this site, in the machines with dual xenons, all the video cards are ATI, so it’s a matter of tracking one down.
Next things to try…
Disable the mmxcore.8bi plug-in
use msconfig to disable one of the processors
Hopefully this will be of some help.
First thing, I removed the plugin mmxcore.8bx, and of course restart photoshop and there was no changes in the instability. So I but it back into the folder.
Since I wasn’t sure how to disable one of the processors with MSconfig, I went ahead and tried removing only the MultiProcessor Support.8bx plugin from Photoshop and now it does not crash. It is still slow, but faster than crashing.
I of course tried it several times with the plugin back in, and then removed. Everytime the plugin was used, PS crashes, and when it was removed from the Photoshop folders, Photposhop was usuable.
I did not find the .8bi extension, but I figured it was the .8bx.

I had mentioned that both of my systems have problems, however, only my home system has the problem with Photoshop. My computer at work doesn’t have the magic wand bug. Since the problems my work computers has is more with Illustrator’s 3D filter, I should say my work computer is fine and concentrate on my home computers problem with Photoshop. Sorry. (It does however does still seem sluggish compared to PS7, but it works and I can deal with that.)

At work we had all sorts of problems until we disabled hyperthreading on all the computers used for multimedia and photoshop

My wife encountered the same problem as many have mentioned.
We have a dual 2ghz xeon also with a Matrox Parhelia 256mb video card
She called Adobe today and he said she should remove the mmx thing and one or two others. Then that seemed to stabilize it but he said that only allowed PSCS to use one of the dual processors.
He said that one of the processors must be defective. I told that to my vendor and she said get new drivers for my video card. Why can’t they make pscs idiot proof or at least warn us of the problems?
If I turn off hyper threading, the magic wand works, but it is still slow.
I did turn it back on and the problems return.
So guessing would point to Photoshop’s incompatibilty with hyper threading. Turning off hyper threading everytime I use Photoshop is not an option. Other programs benefit from Hyper Threading so my default should still be on. Besides, PS7 worked, and all my older Adobe products worked great on this machine untill CS.

I have a single p4 (2.8C) with hyperthreading and it’s working. It’s more like multi-threading with the dual xeons that’s a problem. Just clarifying the terms. Please carry on! 🙂
I also have a dual processor system that does not have hyper threading and the program works fine, as I have said already. So multi-threading is fine.
The problem is only on the dual processor machine that has hyper threading.

Yet it seems to work fine on other people’s systems. But you seem to be ignoring the possibility of a driver or hardware problem on your own system.
John – we can’t predict every possible driver conflict or hardware defect that you’ll see. We can only warn you about problems that we know about, and we try to fix all of those before we ship the product.

Well, I have not ignored that possibility. However, the problem is still there, and it is not only on my machines, there are others that are posting the same problem with dual processor systems.
This has already been mentioned in the thread.
However, I have made sure that I have all the latest drivers, and all my programs work, including PS7. The only exception is Photoshop CS.
What sort of hardware problem should I look for that only effects the Magic Wand in PS-CS?
I understand that we are trying help each other, but lets not act like I am here blinding pointing a finger at Adobe or trying to get a solution to a problem on only my machine. There is a problem and it is not only on my machine.
Hi, I’m new to the forum.
I have experienced the same "Could not complete your request because of a program error" many times since upgrading from PS 6 to CS. It has always been with the magic wand tool, with many different images at different zoom levels, etc. I even tried a fresh install of the operating system and PS with no luck. See system specs below for some similarities:
IWill DP533 with Intel 7505 chipset
Dual 2.4GHz Xeon CPU’s with 533FSB
1GB PC2100 DDR RAM
PNY nVidia GeforceFX 5600 256MB Video Card
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Standard
All drivers are latest signed versions. It sounds like hyperthreading in a dual CPU configuration (4 virtual CPU’s) might be a problem. I will try to verify what others have posted regarding this and let everyone know.

We’re continuing to try and reproduce the problem you’re seeing but haven’t had any success thus far on our Dual Xeon systems. Could those of your experiecing the problem post your system info as displayed in Photoshop (Help | System Info). Please remove your serial # info before posting.
Also, if others have specific steps they use to reproduce this problem, please provide them. Please also let us know if the problem is resloved by removing the Multiprocessor Support plugin.

The steps I use to reproduce the problem are as follows:
1) Run PS
2) Open a bmp file (i’ve tried more than one with similar results)
3) Select magic wand tool with following options:
New Selection
Tolerance: 32
Anti-Aliased: Checked
Contiguous: Checked
Use All Layers: Unchecked
4) Click on area of bmp to select with tool
5) Hold left-shift key to add to existing selection
6) Click on other areas of bmp
7) Repeat steps 5-6 until error (Stop dialog saying "Could not complete your request because of a program error") occurs
The error does not always appear after the same number of selections and seems to change depending on the area selected and the file used, but the error eventually occurs every time. Sometimes I also get an Application Error from windows (Unhandled exception at 0x77f47a6d in Photoshop.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000). I’ve tried to debug this (with Visual Studio) but without source code it’s not terribly useful. I could provide a call stack trace if you need it, though.
Another thing I’ve noticed is that on the occasion that I DO NOT get an application error from windows, I can hit OK on the PS error dialog and then the magic wand action works fine. Very strange, indeed.
I disabled HyperThreading in the motherboard BIOS and the problem went away. This is not an acceptable solution in my book. Also, removing the Multiprocessor support plugin fixed the problem, but at a noticeable loss of performance.

I was able to reproduce this as well. Seems like 6 or 7 clicks is the magic number for the error to pop up, but it happened to someone else here with just one click.
In either case, disabling hyperthreading or the mp plug-in will prevent the error.
I will post my system info when I get to my other system, which has the continuing problem.
As far as how many clicks, I have had the error show up very quickly (1-3 clicks) and then some longer click numbers, but I ususally did not count the number. So my experience is various, but it will always happen.
Just to reiterate what I did post before, with hyper threading disabled, there is no problem, and if the mp plugin is removed, again there is no problem.
We’ve reproduced the problem here, and I’m looking into it.
I’m still not sure why it happens just with hyperthreading and not with just multiple processors.

Any updates? I get so worked up when I know that I have too rfrain from using a certain tool. On teh plus note, I am getting better at other tools, but they just do not compare to the magic wand.
Not sure this would work (chris would know for sure), if you have 7.0, swap out the mp plug-in and see if the lock-ups persist in CS
malameel, have you tried resetting your prefrences per the faq?

4 what it’s worth, a lot of apps have issues with Dual Xeon/Hyperthreading. Nuendo 2 is a classic example.
Admittedly I’ve not seen this on a dual P3 1.4GHz system, but I am having other bad crashes. See "Repeatedly Hanging on Startup " post.
PSCS seems much, much more wobbly than 7.01 ever did.

No news is not always good news. Has really nothing new have come over this? I guess disabling hyperthreading or the mp plugin is they only workaround? In other words make PS-CS slower so it can work? (Which is already significantly slower than the previous version.)
I still get crashes. They may not always bring PSCS down, but since they sometimes do, it sucks to be fearful of using a PS Tool.
As far as other programs crahsing with dual Xeons and Hyperthreading, I have not seen it untill CS. I agree with you Neil that CS is wobbly than PS7, However, I would say CS is "beta" compared to PS7. It is just so slow. Even saving and opening, or "building histograms" or whatever PS excuse comes up when something new comes up. I wonder if these problems also are because of Dual Xeons and Hyperthreading.
Its not like dual xeons or hyperthreading is new or an unexpected configuration.

You never came back to say if your Color prefs>advanced controls had dithering for conversions selected, and if not, how things come out when that option is selected…??
Did you get rid of the banding from large amounts of gaussian blur applied in 16 bit or not?

Same problem here. All of our new computers do this with PhotoShop CS. We are using new Dell Precision Workstations, using Xeon processors also.
So what you’re saying is that PhotoShop CS is not compatible with 64 bit processors? If that’s the case, we’ll have to dump PhotoShop and go with another program. At $6000 per workstation, it’s cheaper to dump the software and go with something else. Is that your recommendation? Sounds like it to me….
Oh, I forgot, we’re running Windows XP Professional with all the updates. We just got these systems two moths ago, so there isn’t anything newer out there. They have 2 GB of ram, and they’re running at 3.06 Ghz.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I use a Pentium 4 at home, running 3.06 GB with 1.5 GB of ram, and that system also crashes on occasion using PS 7, so it ISN’T a hardware problem. PhotoShop crashes from time to time for no reason, so don’t blame the equipment.
I thought PSCS was designed to work with 64 bit systems anyway?
just so you know, xeons are not 64 bit processors.
and we already know how to stop the crashing, so you’ll have to use one of those workarounds for now.
To John Slate, my DSL line at home is being transferred to a new location so I can get btter bandwith. I do not have internet at this time so I have been missing lots of stuff, so I am sorry about not keeping up with that thread, I will shortly.
