I fully understand that to install an upgrade version, Adobe states that you need to have a previous version installed. Is this true? I have a new computer and did not want to install the old version and then install the new version. Is it possible to *point* to the CD drive that contains the CD of the old version? Will this *fool* the install of the new version? OR — do I really have to install the old version first — NOT EVEN SURE IF V4.0 WILL INSTALL ON XP>

Thanks

You don’t need to install PS 4 – during th einstall you’ll need to have the CD available so that it can be verified.

But PS 4 is too old to be automatically verified by merely placing the cd in the drive. It will require a telephone call to Adobe. You’ll need your serial number for the old version 4 as well as your new version CS serial number. The operator (if he/she is informed) will take you through special steps to get it installed using the old version 4.

Hi

Do you need to do the "phone call procedure" if, like me you have 5.5.

Like David I will be setting up a PC just for PS CS running Win2K and would prefer not to install 5.5 if I can avoid it!

Thanks in advance.

5.5 should be recognized by the CS. In fact, I thought 4.0 would be, also.

Since 4.0 was OK to upgrade to PS 7 in this way, I assumed CS would be similar. Sorry if my assumption was misleading. End game is the same – don’t need to actually install PS 4.

Colin – I am confused. What is the End game for version 4.0? I need to call on the phone? Was your last response in answer to version 5.5?

David:

I was saying that my knowledge is limited to my experience with upgrading from 4 to 7 [not CS]. From what I see elsewhere, it looks like you can do an install without needing to call Adobe. But, if you do need to call, where’s the problem in that? It is certain that you don’t need to install 4.

I am purchasing PS CS. Currently have an uninstalled v4.0. What will be the process to install PS CS without intalling v4? Will I need to call the Support Number to provide my old installation key? Will I need to install v4.0 first.

Thanks in advance.

You DO NOT need to install version 4.0 first. If it’s a CD, I believe you can use it for verification purposes. You’ll be asked to remove the CS CD and insert the 4.0 CD at one point during the installation.

Bob, I was under the impression that CS needed a 5.5 or higher CD for verification without calling Adobe. Seems it would be easier to leave 4.0 installed until after the CS upgrade

I’m not sure, but there’s one way to find out. Try it.
