I was trying to speed benchmark different CPUs in different computers and running different OS and PS filters are excellent vehicles. However the Timing option in the Status bar functions inconsistently depending on the Filter. With some filters (Sharpen>Unsharp Mask, Noise, Texture) you open the Filter window, chose the filter settings, click OK and the timer starts at that time. With other filters (Blur>Radial Blur, Artistic>Colored Pencil, etc) the timer starts immediately when you bring up the Filter settings window. So if you take 1 min. to chose the settings and the filter takes 8 secs to execute, the timer shows 68 secs. I expect you can circumvent by using an action or running the filter once and then Crtl F, however that is not the way I would expect the timer to function in manual mode. In any event, it should function consistently for all filters.

I agree that consistency would be nice, but I can see why each method was used. For benchmarks, the method you prefer would be best. But if the timings are to be used in job costing … determining how long jobs actually take to run, the setup time is a component that should be measured.

I suspect it depends on the programmer who built the filter which path they chose.

Don, the timer only times the last PS operation and would therefore effectively be useless as a work log. Similarly it not cumulative on actions. It sounds like it was either a programming error or perhaps there is some limitation in the program architecture which prevents it the timer activation after parameter selection.
I now notice that all of the filters which have Previews available, start the timing only after the OK button is clicked. All of the filters which do not have preview modes, start the timer as soon as the Filter setting window comes up.
I agree with you that if you needed the time for billing purposes, you would want to include set-up time. But in the real world, you don’t time single operations unless they are extremely long and if that were the case the extra 15 or 20 secs of set up time wouldn’t really matter.

Don, to record the time you work to charge customers, the history log of PSCS (set to sessions only)is what you need!

I agree that we need a reliable way to compare our machines, not to have the fastest of the block, but to be able to troubleshoot our workstations!

Pierre, try doing a long duration action set which contains 3 radial blurrs on 100 large 300 dpi images, each image of which must be set up manually with a special starting layer. Time is money and sometimes in PS the fastest machine is important. Rgds, MM
