This is a beginner question. I am learning photoshop from a book. The exercise I am doing involves moving an object to another location. I am to select the object with the rectangular marquee tool. Then I am to position the pointer inside the selection. Pointer becomes an arrow with small selection icon next to it. Pointer changes color to black when I start to drag. I drag to the new location and let go of the mouse button. The object hasn’t moved. What am I doing wrong? Why can’t I reposition the selected object?

Thanks for your help

You need to choose the move selection tool after making your selection

It’s the first one on the right in the tools palette.

You are probably using the selection tool, which moves the selection, instead of the move tool (next to it in the toolbox).

in addition to what rene said (which is correct) you can temporarily select the move tool by holding the crtl key. the cursor will turn to the move tool icon (black arrow). keep holding crtl down and you can now move the selectd part around anywhere you want. when you let go of the crtl key, the last selected tool (in this case, the rectangular marquee tool) will be active again.
