purple tone to grayscale images

Recently my grayscale images have a purple tone to them. When converting a color image to grayscale, the result is purple. Open my images that are grayscale already, purple. when saving it for web, and the image pops up in the ‘save for web’ window, it is correctly displayed as grayscale. save it and then insert it into illust. or word or any other software and it is also displayed correctly. Yesterday, when the problem began, i downloaded my microsoft updates, and i am sure this was the start of the problem. I have checked the color settings, comparing these settings to other work stations in the company, and the settings are the same. So, what is the deal…….? Anyone have a clue?

I kind of have the same problem in printing, but mine may be a driver issue. I am not sure. I have taken some pictures and converted to grayscale in Photoshop and then printed with my Canon S9000 and the result had a slight reddish to purple tone to it. I did some testing and would stop the printer from printing halfway through by lifting the lid. When I looked at the print, the printer was mixing colors to get grey. I assumed that it would vary the black ink for this, but I have never done black and white printing until now. I also tested by leaving the picture in RGB mode and setting my Canon driver to print grayscale and I also change the pic to grayscale and set the driver to grayscale. Still the same result: printer is mixing colors to make gray. Is this right? I did a grayscale print a few weeks ago that turned out great. When I tried to print again I never could get it to work out and that is what led to this testing.

I just fixed my problem here by changing the phosphor type in Adobe Gamma in the Control Panel. I went to the user manual specs for the monitor and found my phorphor type was wrong. This fixed my problem with grayscale pictures showing up as purple pictures in Photoshop 6.
