I am having terrible problems with PhotoShop CS. The program makes my system crash, and it eats my RAM for lunch. I have a 2.6 GHz machine with 1 GIG o-RAM… any suggestions for a fix?? Anyone know of any settings to solve this? I’ve read else where that many other people are having problems with it as well. How can the new stuff they put in there take up soooo much more RAM than 7.0.1?? did I mention that…. I HATE PHOTOSHOP CS!!!!, i wish i never upgraded!

See the Adobe web site for the typical reasons it fails. Chances are most excellent that the problem is defective RAM or video hardware, or some unacceptable font or plugin that’s loading. Run some robust system utilites before you hate CS. You might find reason to hate your hardware even more.

A little mor information would help:
1. Is this an Intel or AMD system? If it’s AMD, then make sure you have the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.
2. What utilities do you have running? i.e. antivirus, other utilities.
3. Whe you say the system crashes, is it the program that errors out, or is
it Windows that crashes?
4. Which version of Windows? Which patches?
5. What other programs are installed.

I’d suspect your problems are either caused by a utility running, or a conflict with another program.

One alternative is to do a clean install (yeah, I know it’s a pain, but sometimes it’s the only thing that works)

I agree that more information would help. Did you recently install SP2 for Windows XP? I know that the SP2 update patch overwrites some library files with an older version.

I’ve noticed CS uses more RAM than 7, but I haven’t had any problems on my system which only has 512MB memory.

have you tried trashing your preferences file? that’s the first thing you should do if you think photoshop is misbehaving. how much RAM have you alloted to ps? if you have more than 75% alloted that could be at least part of the problem. how many history states is ps set for? history states gobble up memory.

Start downloading memtest86 – if that does not find defective RAM, try prime95 for a night.

Now go down to the shop, and return the crappy defective RAM and buy some brand name quality RAM.

IMHO unstable windows machines = cheap memory. As long as you reboot once a day, Windows will work.

hey, yes already tried nuking the prefs for Photoshop… also I recently did a clean wipe of the OS (Widoz XP Home) and no dice… i installed Photoshop CS on a clean OS (no SP2 either) … What happens is I start Photoshop and it freezes for like 10 seconds when it finally loads. If I try to click on a menu after it’s loaded before the first 10 seconds is up it says in the title bar "application not responding" then this goes away…. then the rest of the time… the program just sucks!! eats all my memory… I’ve set the memory usage to 50%.. still behaves bad! I’ve been using Photoshop sine version 2.0 and this is the first piece of shit version every!!!

Okay, I get exactly the same thing. PS hasn’t fully loaded its routines. If you rush, then any attempt to file-open stops the process and you have to go to Task Manager, kill both sessions (there are two as it opens) and try again.

Ten seconds isn’t much to ask, so I just wait and leave it on in the background all day. But it is a pain.

Does Adobe KNOW ABOUT THIS? Dunno!

There have been some suggestions about checking your hardware (memory). Did you do that?
I have a 2.4 Ghz & 512 ram, but have no problems at all.

Now then, have you noticed that extremely negative days filled with negatives thoughts seem ….. well, rather negative.

Psychologists now have an explanation based on 3 areas of the brain.

These are the neocortex, reptilian brain and the lymphic system (I am not too sure about this last bit – you may need to google for precise detail)

The neocortex is the thinking business bit
The reptilian bit is the fight or flight bit

and research shows that the lymphic bit acts as a sort of great fat controller.

It dwells on incoming info and decides to sent it up to the neocortex or down to the reptilian

This is one reason why, for example, when fleeing from hungry dinosaurs we tend not to turn around and seek to discuss the finer consequences of thermo-dynamics in the solar system

The reptilian bit has whacked out a huge great dose of adrenelin and you really will clear that 6 ft high fence in one leap

It also links through psychological and physiological processes and observations why negativity is so damaging and hurtful

I hope this help the original poster

On the other hand there is always knitting or some less demanding activity

As for a cracked version…maybe Adobe should drop its price so everyone can afford a legal one instead of pirating one like a few people I know did. Also their installations work without any glitches. The price in Canada is around 850.00 CDN$ just in case you want to know. What a rip off but it is a great package to use.

Adobe did lower their price. It’s called Photoshop Elements 3. If you can’t afford a BMW, do you steal one or do you buy a car you CAN afford?

Hmmm, I think most who would pirate SW would tell you that if "nicking" a "Beemer" was as easy as grabbing a copy of PS and the probability of getting "busted" was as extremely low as it is with software, they’d most likely say YES!!!!

What an ass! Element is not Photoshop period. Not that close even if you really compare. Beside Adobe has just had record profits this last year and to the present. Might be that a lot of people that had pirating users made the decision to buy after trying it. Also, bad comparison since the BMW is one of the most overpriced piece of shit out there. Besides I think the amount of illegal copies are greatly overstated and most of those who have them do not even know what they have and how to use it.

Plus, you probably cheat on your income tax or tell lies to your bar pickups.

Not quite.
I use Corel Draw 11 a lot and while I believe it is awesome for designing ads and such
it has a horrible word processing function. It’s like they never improved on the old Ventura publishing program that started the whole thing. PhotoPaint, that comes in the suite is ok but not even in the same universe as adobe CS.
I would suggest going back to PS7. It’s what I still use for using working with anything photographic and art altering related.

I beg to differ on your comment about Photopaint not being in the same universe as Photoshop. You clearly are not proficient in Photopaint. I have yet to find a person who could sit next to me with Photoshop open while I had Photopaint open and demonstrate to me why Photoshop is better…BUT…I have on EVERY occasion demonstrated why Photopaint is better than Photoshop. So much more direct and gets the result you need quicker! Learn the program properly and see how customisable it is to make your workflow so much faster.

Do that again, but this time march over to the pre-press expert. It’s likely he will throw you out the door.

That just goes to show that your highly vaulted "pre-press expert" is *****VERY***** limited … in his viewpoint and in his capabilities. His "marketplace," while it is at times quite demanding and complex, is very limited, very shortsighted, and usually employs people who become very good at following a very restricted *menu* of "socially acceptable practice" … and literally snubbing anything else just on "general principles." A couple of the choices on that very restricted menu are:

(1) PhotoShop is the **only** image editing program …

(2) Adobe Illustrator is the **only** vector graphics program

(3) PostScript Type 1 fonts are the **only** fonts you can use …

(4) Quirk Depress is the **only** page layout program …

(5) Macintosh is the **only** computer …

Those particular menu choices are now history … and no longer apply, even to the "high end" portions of the graphics marketplace. In fact … they are particularly obsolete in the High-End Photographic Imaging portion of the marketplace.

Corel PhotoPaint has been as capable … if not MORE capable … as PhotoShop for something like ten (10) years, as has Corel Draw (the vector component) has been thoroughly the equal (or superior) to Adobe Illustrator. In fact, in 1995 I was working at a high-end advertising photographer’s studio in Southern California, doing **16 bit** photo manipulation of images taken on a direct digital camera, using Corel PhotoPaint

PhotoShop could only ‘Open’ the images … but the full job could only be done by PhotoPaint! Including "Separations" and "Color Management."

Just remember when you invoke "the highly vaulted pre-press expert" that you are trying to idolize someone who really, truly, thinks "graphics can not be ‘done’ on a PC" … and who’s output is strictly limited to what can be printed on a four-color printing press. He/she may know how to perform miracles on "that press" … but usually he/she is completely limited to that device. Not all images are destined to be printed that way, and high-end imaging now goes way beyond the four-color printing press.

You might find it very educational to spend a week working on each of the following programs … each of which offers capabilities that Adobe PhotoShop can only dream about.

Corel’s PhotoPaint
Corel’s Painter
Digital Light and Color’s Picture Window Pro

Disclaimer:
I own licenses for, and use **all** of the programs mentioned above (with the exception of Adobe Illustrator), and do not profit from, or have any interest(s) in the companies that furnish them.

I used to use Draw and Photopaint a lot. I’ve gradually found I have less use for them and haven’t bothered to upgrade. The more I used Photoshop, the less I used Photopaint. And the more I understood about colour management, the less I *wanted* to use Draw/Paint. YMMV

Corel still has one sup0erb, unmatched program though – Painter which I use almost as much as Photoshop. However, when it comes to printing, I drop the layers and transfer the file to PS.

Well, I really enjoyed all the discussion following my comments about Photoshop/Photopaint. Thanks guys, great entertainment and I was impressed by the non-biased responses too! There is certainly one thing VASTLY superior about Adobe than Corel – its newsgroups!!! Keep up the good work. Brian.

Well, I’ll have to give it another look. I haven’t in a few years. I will say that if they keep pace with cd it has to have improved. I love CD9 & 11. But I stand by my statement about the crappy word processing in CD. It truly sucks.

"Brian" wrote in message
I beg to differ on your comment about Photopaint not being in the same universe as Photoshop. You clearly are not proficient in Photopaint. I
have
yet to find a person who could sit next to me with Photoshop open while I had Photopaint open and demonstrate to me why Photoshop is
better…BUT…I
have on EVERY occasion demonstrated why Photopaint is better than
Photoshop.
So much more direct and gets the result you need quicker! Learn the
program
properly and see how customisable it is to make your workflow so much faster.
Oh well, each to their own. I am still going to keep reading the articles
in
here as I closely follow Photoshop’s development and still think it is a great program. I also find the contributors in this newsgroup both interesting and witty! Great bunch of people. All the best, Brian.

Not quite.
I use Corel Draw 11 a lot and while I believe it is awesome for
designing
ads and such
it has a horrible word processing function. It’s like they never
improved
on
the old Ventura publishing program that started the whole thing. PhotoPaint, that comes in the suite is ok but not even in the same universe
as adobe CS.
I would suggest going back to PS7. It’s what I still use for using
working
with anything photographic and art altering related.

"Brian" wrote in message
hey, alternatively you could buy CorelDRAW and get a suite equivalent
to
Photoshop, Pagemaker and Illustrator rolled into one package for about 2/3
the price of Photoshop. It is a lot more customisable and user-friendly
too.

you got a link to that bmw??

As for a cracked version…maybe Adobe should drop its price so

Also their installations work without any glitches. The price in

is
around 850.00 CDN$ just in case you want to know. What a rip off
but
it
is a
great package to use.

Adobe did lower their price. It’s called Photoshop Elements 3. If you can’t afford a BMW, do you steal one or do you buy a car you CAN afford?

The vector capabilities of CD is great. And, it merges very well with AI. AND, one of my biggest peeves are the short sighted pre-press guys, since I was in early
on the pc vs. mac thing. It took a lot of searching early on to find film houses that where setup to accept pc art. now that most magazine pre-press and publishers accept hi-res pdf files, those same film houses are how you say "sianara".

You might find it very educational to spend a week working on each of the following programs … each of which offers capabilities that Adobe PhotoShop can only dream about.

Corel’s PhotoPaint
Corel’s Painter
Digital Light and Color’s Picture Window Pro

I have watched your postings over the last several months, in this and other forums, and can definitely say that you do **not** know what you are talking about.

"Shill for another project" … ?

I’ve got much … **much** more to do than time to do it. So … the answer is no.

Have you checked out the Corel newsgroups on their own server?

Go to their web site, and you can find out how to get to them. Otherwise, point your newsreader to

news:cnews.corel.com

and you might find a whole "new world" of people using Corel’s products.

Second that. The Corel newsgroups are excellent, it’s just their products (except Painter) I have a problem with <g>

Adobe’s groups are moderated (to use a less loaded term) as well. Corel’s allow (small) binary attachments, which can be helpful at times.

There’s a difference between "CENSORED" and "MODERATED."

As mentioned by others, those newsgroups that are hosted by Adobe, Corel, Micro$oft, and many others are *Moderated* in order to prevent the sometimes off-topic and objectionable postings.

It would be great if they allowed small attachments here!

With the exception of a number of "binary" groups, Usenet is a text only medium. Binary groups are not supposed to to be archived, and posts of binaries expire faster than most text groups. You can either post a link to a binary group, or to a website, in the message you post here.
