Could any one tell me if it is possible to obtain colour separations from a picture using Photoshop. Also, is it restricted to only CMYK. Is it possible to obtain light cyan, light magenta, orange n stuff ??.. also can u get Hexachrome.. If photoshop can’t do it, could you please tell me a software that can create separations!

Thanks

John,

Provided you have a PostScript printer you can output CMYK seps from Photoshop directly

Photoshop does NOT support Hexachrome output, but a Hexachrome-capable RIP will do on-RIP separations to Hexachrome from RGB files.

I think Pantone has a plugin for making hex separations in PS and others, but I haven’t used it and it’s pretty expensive.

John,

Another option would to get Acrobat 6 and export your file to a PDF. Acrobat 6 has a new feature to check CMYK seps without the need to print anything. Plus you can view the document as closely as you want to. Most printers people use for this kind of work might force you to resize your image to a smaller size. Not only that but you save paper and eliminate some waste in your workflow, in itself a very good thing.

Note that you need Acrobat 6 Professional to preview seps.

Also, even if your inkjet printer uses light cyan and magenta in addition to CYMK, you still need to send RGB files, or you’ll have very poor results (that is, unless it is a postscript printer)
