I use Photoshop 3. I would like to know if there is a way of refining a selection precisely pixel by pixel.

Zoom in on the image until you can see the separate pixels and manipulate them.

Thanks for replying.I have tried to do what you suggest. It makes following the desired path easier but the use of the zoom effect makes the picture so large that I need to scroll to see the other parts of the picture that I need to select. If I release the lasso tool in order to scroll, the selection (the part I have already selected) self completes. I am looking for a method which enables me to pause while selecting so as to make any necessary adjustments adjustments before continuing my selection process. I only need to do this when I require to be very precise in what I am selecting.
Hope you can help

Have you experimented with Quick mask? It lets you make selections by painting with the paintbrush tools, and correcting with the eraser. When you go out of QM mode, what you have left is a selection that can be pixel perfect.

…or as perfect as you can paint with a brush <g>

Photoshop 3?? Geez.

Did that even have layers?

John,

Yes it was the first version to have layers. It also had layer masks and even quick mask so Don’s suggestion should work fine.

David,

You could also make a rough selection, zoom in, then modify the selection by using Shift & Alt to add or subtract from the selection.

If you use Quick Mask you will probably want to use the pencil instead of the brush to work pixel by pixel without anti-aliasing (White adds, Black subtracts).
