I have one day left to xmas – I am trying to use Photoshop to create a montage of many other images – I would like to know how to implement a transparent background for the layers within my project – I am still looking on Google for answers – but time is running out – TIA – Merry Xmas

Clicking on the new layer icon at the bottom of the layers palette will create a new transparent layer. My guess is you’re having trouble with the layers you already have. you have several options.

You can erase the portions you want to be transparent.

You can make a selection using any of the selection tools–marquees, lassos, magic wand–selecting what you wish to remain and then select inverse and delete the offending pixels.
You can add a layer mask to the parts you want to be transparent, which can also be done with the selection.

Alt double click the bg layer to make it editable. Erase or mask the area you want transparent. Save in png, gif or similar format that allows transparency…
