cant choose feather

I want to feather this nice picture and make it from square to round. It will fade and feather alot so it dissapears gradualy. I tryed feather and I cant select it because its not a dark text. To give you an idea what it might be the ones that are not dark type in the same section as feather the rest are: no reselect, no grow, no similar, no load section. Thankyou for your advice in advance. I already tried to change it to cmyk from rgb but that doesnt help.

How many layers do you have?
Which version of PS?
Which selection tool are you using?

Colin’s questions are important for you to receive help.

When a selection is "grayed out"–something isn’t "compatible" with what you are trying to do.

I use the eliptical marquee to select and feather for a "vignette" sort of look.
