I have created a photo collage with a 1/2" border of white space around the edges. When I look at what the output will be in Print Options, it looks ok except there is a gray area on the right side of the page if in landscape and on the bottom of the page if it is in portrait mode. When I print, this gray area adds an additional 1/2" of white space either on the bottom of my printout or the right edge depending if the paper is in portrait or landscape mode. I have clicked on the center image option but I always get this extra white space. Every printout does this so I cannot center on the page properly.

I cannot print anything without getting this extra white space. I have Photoshop 6.0.1 on Windows 98 with an Epson C80 printer. I have tried this on an Epson C82 with the same problem. Is this an Epson problem or a photoshop problem?

It seems as if the software is not looking at the whole size of the document not matter what size the document is, it leaves this gray area that adds white space to the page.

Betty,

Is this an Epson problem or a photoshop problem?

It’s an Epson "problem", if you want to call it that. Most Epson printers, including my venerable Epson Stylus Photo, have mandatory margins, and the bottom margin is usually larger than any of the others. Check your printer’s manual for what your mandatory margins are for the sheet size you are printing on.

Photoshop can come to your rescue to allow you to make the top and bottom white margins equal. Simply add a white space at the top of your image (by changing the Canvas size or by painting in white) equal in width to the difference between your mandatory bottom margin and your mandatory top margin. That will center the image between the top edge of the paper and the bottom edge.

If you want to make the side margins equal to the top and bottom margins, add appropriate white spaces at the left side and right side of your image.

I wind up trimming off my white margins to get marginless prints, so I don’t bother with any of this any more. I print an 8×10 on an 8.5×11 sheet.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
