Here’s a simple question. I am a licensed user of Photoshop 4.0 for Windows. Remember that version? Anyway, I wanted to know if I can upgrade to Photoshop CS from Photoshop 4.0. If the answer is yes, then I’ll get it. If the answer is no…I won’t bleed my wallet and credit card to get the full version. I’ll start investigating alternatives like Paint Shop Pro. Putting up with activation is one thing…but being forced to buy the full version is an entirely different issue.

Yes, you can use the upgrade if you own 4.0. But you’ll need to call Adobe at (800) 685-3658 (not the number given in the readme file) to complete the activation process. Whether Adobe’s programmers screwed up and created an installer incapable of reading program serial numbers prior to V5.0 or whether they intended to originally restrict the upgrade to 5.0 owners and up and changed their minds is unknown. Either way, as the tech explained on the phone, they need to run you through a couple of command line prompts with the installer to feed it the correct code. So they said. I’d already borrowed a friend’s V6.0 CD-ROM and used it as the "check" for the installer so I didn’t get to actually run through the entire process myself. But querying the tech gave me the scenario as described above.

Your mileage may vary, etc. but this was hot off the presses this very morning.

Sounds like Adobe screwed it up. I’m not getting the upgrade. I’ll stick with my legally purchased copy of Adobe Photoshop 4.0 thank you very much. I’m very disappointed to hear this. Either Adobe fixes their own upgrade license issues or I’m not getting their upgrade at all. If they’ve messed up their own license upgrade options on their own software…I don’t think Adobe is for the customers anymore. I’m going to take a look at alternatives out there. So I’d have to be a licensed user of Version 6.0? Forget it.

You did not read the previous post correctly or you are simply trolling.

Call Adobe at the number given and they will walk you thru the upgrade process. Minor inconvenience IMHO.

Hope this helps,

I’d recommend rereading what I wrote. The first two sentences are key and they’re pretty clear…
