Read the fucking manual (RTFM for short). This is the most common comment to question like this. Adobe’s manuals are usually quite informative compared to other major companies. (Try reading Corel’s User Manual, for instance, if you get a chance. Now *that* is what I call pain.) 🙂

As for batch, I can’t help you. Wait for others to respond. (Hecate! Where’s Hecate!)

I’ve got a question for y’all, too.

When batch resizing images, is there a way to tell PS to, say, make the *longer* edge (either horizontal or vertical) equal to something?

In response to your question…
Not exactly sure I understand what you want to do.
"Equal" to WHAT?
Explain yourself more.
But if what you mean is to make one side longer on some pix, and shorter on others, like 800×600 vs. 600×800…
Try creating an action for both edges… (horizontal or vertical)…like say "resize 800×600" and "resize 600×800"…or whatever you want them equal to…and just run either one as a batch command.

Take your own advice.

Manuals aren’t always the easiest thing to comprehend…especially for a Non-GEEK.

What’s a non-geek doing with Photoshop?

That’s the primary reason WHY there are forums like this to ask questions.

Really? And when did that happen?

If everyone "RTFM"…there would be no NEED for PS Newsgroups… WE’D KNOW!

Have you even LOOKED at the Photoshop help file?
Press: F1
Search: "batch"
First entry: "Using the Batch Command"
First Sentence: "The Batch command lets you play an action on a folder of files and subfolders"

Man, you’re right, that’s fucking HARD to comprehend, isn’t it?

I’m here to learn and to try and help people if I can with my limited knowledge.

Please to be adding the word ‘very’ before the word ‘limited’, thanks.

DBAFI,
How to use a NG:
1) Try to find your answer in the Manual
2) Do an advanced Group search in Google in alt.graphics.photoshop http://www.google.com/advanced_group_search?hl=en
3) If you still have problems ask somebody in the NG

In simple terms it enables you to record an action, and then run it all the images in a folder, for example
my Nikon D1 produces images that are a little magenta in colour, it’s a standard problem, so I have a action that uses selective colour and takes out 100% cyan and 35% magenta from the red channel. so I run this on all my images after I have down loaded them from the camera.
you can also assign this to a droplet that can sit on your desk top so all you do is drag a file in to the droplet and Photoshop runs the action.

Simple. Boot up Photoshop. Hit F1. On the alphabet at the top, click on A. Scroll down till you come to Actions. Follow the instructions. Then, when you get stuck and have a specific question, come back here and ask it.

As far as picture editing goes, whilst there are lots of Photoshop and Photographic sites, some of which are excellent, if you don’t know where to start you’re better off reading a book first. Try the Photoshop Visual QuickStart Guide which will give you lots of basic info and act like a manual, only more easy to read. And if you’re particularly interested in Photography, get Martin Evening’s Photoshop for Photographers. But be aware that none of it is easy, and Photoshop especially isn’t easy. You could be using it for 15 years and still not know half of what’s in the package.

If you’re thinking you want easy answers, then you won’t get them. PS isn’t like that. If you *need* easy answers, buy Photoshop Elements. A lot more handholding in there.

Read the fucking manual (RTFM for short). This is the most common comment to question like this. Adobe’s manuals are usually quite informative compared to other major companies. (Try reading Corel’s User Manual, for instance, if you get a chance. Now that is what I call pain.) 🙂

I don’t give orders. If you took it as an order, than you should join the army. They love people who think every suggestion is an order.

If you fuckheads are gonna play stupid, that’s fine with me. But do try to be more intelligent when interpreting posts, okay.

And, just FYI, I’m not five minutes PS user. I use PS for pro work at least five hours a day at times. I’ve learned PS on my own using the manual as the only reference in under 24 hours (and that’s because the PS manual is so well written — I dare say it’s the best), and English is not my native language.

five hours a day at times. I’ve learned PS on my own using the manual as the only reference in under 24 hours (and that’s because the PS manual is so well written — I dare say it’s the best), and English is not my native language.

Then perhaps you should study it a while longer. Though from your response here I doubt if your answer to Pat was offensive by accident.

I hate to repeat myself, but: "If you fuckheads are gonna play stupid, that’s fine with me. But do try to be more intelligent when interpreting posts, okay."

Some people just like to cause problems. I would like to point out though that the original response of RTFM is a common Net usage and I’m sure wasn’t particularly aimed at being awkward. It may not be a plolit4e phrase <g> but it is common usage 🙂

You know, Hecate, it’s hard to tell what’s polite on this ng. The F word’s been used so often that "RTFM" seemed like just another benign comment. I guess it was not, tho. 😉 Besides, there seems to be an overall lack of humor (or sense thereof) on this ng. Hot jokes cool over the Atlantic?

Then don’t.
You are no more intelligent now than you were the first time. BTW, if you are going to make posts that are open to interpretation then you can guarantee they will be misinterpreted.
Swearing does not make you clever, nor does it make you right.

damn…it would be nice to see some of the folks who are quick to take aim at newbie and percieved "stupid" questions…..actualy POST something on this newsgroup that is helpful…rather than just take all too easy pop shots at folks.

scrolling through the threads….i have yet to see one intelligent or useful post by vovoid (void of all intelligence, use or purpose).

If you see something see a newbie or "idiot" question….just STFU (shut the fc up). It will save space, time and frustration for yourself and others.

peace,

I’d say this remark also applies to those who are obsessed with the idea that some pepople don’t like newbies (and their questions). As far as I can tell, Voivod is not picky when it comes to flaming. He probably has his own idea of what’s (and who’s) stupid, as we all do, and that does not necessarily mean it’s the newbies. I’ve seen him deliver on both ends of the usefulness scale, sometimes helping the newbies, sometimes flaming the not-so-newbies.

The main issue is not whether the question is "stupid" or not. ("There are no stupid questions," one might add.) The real problem is not resorting to RTFM *before* asking away. As I pointed out before (perhaps not too explicitly), there’s no reason why people who don’t RTFM should be considered foolish. It’s the people who skip on RTFM advice and want the FM to be written for them on this ng that could be called stupid. Of course, this is my personal opinion <all rights reserved>, but I think many would share the same view (read the EULA <g>).

Another issue is people’s lack of understanding for phrases like RTFM. [But that’s, I suppose, a language issue. ;)] I think I’ve explained already why reading this particual fucking manual (i.e, the PS manual) could prove to be more useful than flaming on the ng (which is, as we could all see, inevitable). Don’t you think that this is as helpful to a newbie as solving the problems for them?

Damn..it would be nice to see some newbie spend 30 seconds researching their question before expecting other people to do it for them.

Aww, another cute name lame!

Didn’t we already cover how stupid you look if you have to explain an acronym after using it?

It’s the same old, old problem and one I’m guilty of causing myself sometimes. Humans are animals and when they meet face to face read each others body language to decide, for example, whether that baring of teeth is a threat or a smile. You can’t do that on Usenet. You have to rely on the dreaded smiley and common sense. Both of which are a poor substitute for human expression in a text environment.

Everybody is guilty of taking umbrage ( I love that word <g>) at someone else’s "witty" commentary on what they thought was their perfectly crafted message. And because [people often post at times when they’ve already had a hard days work, they are often less than forgiving of errors and so forth. Consequently you see flames lighting up the horizon. The trick is to try and never feed the flames. But, we’re all human, so it happens. 🙂

my Nikon D1 produces images that are a little magenta in colour, it’s a standard problem, so I have a action that uses selective colour and takes out 100% cyan and 35% magenta from the red channel. so I run this on all my images after I have down loaded them from the camera.

Wouldnt’ it be easier to set the white balance in the camera?

Raw images don’t have white balance, by definition.

What’s that got to do with it? Headrush doesn’t say that he is using RAW format.
