For XP to crash like this, I would begin to suspect a hardware fault.
Does this just happen with one particular PSD file where? Where did it come from?
BTW, there is no way, that I can conceive of, whereby a virus could be carried by a PSD file.
1) What is "Soft Ice?
2)That first site is 6 years old! Lots has happened since then.

Debugger.

Not on their side. An endless parade of new "crackers" replacing those who retire, means they are constantly newbees.
Isn’t it why there is no thumbnail for the photoshop files in CS, too many troubles… Could you try to change the way explorer displays the files, to list so that the thumbnail doesn’t crash windows?
Well I got the same problem and it seems I found the solution: seems like windows Explorer runs all my images through shimgvw.dll in System32 folder and that DLL happens to crash on 16-bit images!
And even if you delete the file association from registry, Windows puts it back for you. Well I just went and renamed c:\Windows\System32\shimgvw.dll to something else and no crashes since!
personally, i like the pix and fax viewer. it’s very fast. if i want to edit from there, i select open with from within the pic and fax viewer.
just my opinion. ymmv.

Amen, brother Dave. But you gotta have XP…
The Photoshop Virus
Thinking about this title. The only Photoshop Virus I know of is the one that once you start playing around and figuring it all out, you get deeper and more involved and then play around some more and get deeper and deeper. Is there any hope for a cure? 🙂

When you die.
When you die
Well, Tony, maybe it depends on which way you go…maybe Hades is full of PCs running an old version of W98 on a 300Mhz P3 with 128MB of RAM, and you have to edit 25-layer montages….:)
Bert
maybe Hades is full of PCs running an old version of W98 on a 300Mhz P3 with 128MB of RAM
That confirms it. I’m dead, and in Hades. Sigh, death where is thy sting.
beautiful friend, the end.

And maybe the other place is full of high end Macs … 🙂
[Just kidding – tell us Phosphor!]
Ouch! For those of you who know that all of my systems are Win98SE and the fastest is 700 MHz with 256, the rest being 150’s, 300’s, all with 128MB RAM…. you’re brutal <grin>.
Peace,
Tony
Aw, Tony! I didn’t mean to be mean! Actually, the specs I gave were from the first PC I tried to run Photoshop on, and it was a nightmare. The HD was only 4GB and sloooow, so the swapfile reads and writes took forever with frequent crashes.
Bert
Actually hades would probably be populated with with 486’s running win95 and no service packs. At least it was last time I checked.
Dave,
I’ll defer to your expert knowledge…:)

I saw an excellent cartoon in The New Yorker. Satan was sitting at a desk, and a regular-looking guy was sitting across from him. The setting was very job interview. The caption went "I need someone well versed in the art of torture. Do you know PowerPoint?"
Now that’s funny. Thanks Tim!
It’s not torture if you know how to use it.
Bob
only for those who must sit through it.
Again. It’s not torture if you know what you’re doing.
Bob
neither is the violin, i suppose. also a lot depends on intent of the creator. 🙂
and the amount of coffee and donoughts present in the room.
I know we’re kidding around here, but in all seriousness, PowerPoint is an incredibly powerful program. The problem is that people think they can put it on a secretary’s computer and have him/her prepare a full blown presentation in two hours.
Bob
Turn a page of bulleted lists into an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza.
Er, what was that point you were making on the pink page with the yellow borders? I was distracted by the explosions.
Again. You have to know what you’re doing. 🙂
Bob

I agree, Bob. I think you could apply the same concept to Photoshop. Heck, I saw a review between Photoshop and Paintshop Pro and guess who wins in ease of use, and by implication, the other is torture? (Darn, how convenient that I lost that link, heheh.) For those who reviewed it (was it ZDNet or PCMAG…? /scratching head) PaintShop Pro won in ease of use and Photoshop, they said, shouldn’t even be touched with a ten-foot pole by any novice. Ok, I exaggerated but you get the point. For me Photoshop is the best, but I also like Paintshop. It’s a very capable image-editing application.
Re: "I know we’re kidding around here," so then keep your pants on Bob.
but I also like Paintshop. It’s a very capable image-editing application
Absolutely. There are few features found in one and not the other. After coming to photoshop from PSP, going back to PSP is difficult, and I just can’t get used to the "pretty" buttons on the tool bar; something I was so fond of when I started using PSP.
I was a virgin when I came to Photoshop.
Now I can’t imagine using anything else.
I didn’t even think it was that hard to learn to do basic image editing…but I’ve never used any of the competitors. I guess I’m just married to PS, and I can’t imagine crawling in bed with any of the others…isn’t that why men want to marry virgins?
Bert

I don’t know if you’re kidding or not, Bert, but I sure am smiling from ear to ear, hahahah. Me, I like Photoshop my main workhorse, it’s the best.
But once in a while I crawl under the sheets with this broad called Paintshop Pro, and guess what, it was fun!
I rest my case. /grin/
Speaking of virgins…Photoshop satisfaction really depends on how much you put into it.
LOL!!
But watch out, you guys…those Paintshop ladies will lead you down the path to degradation.
