Greetings All,

I am a recent Photoshop 7 user and seem to be having related problems with displaying thumbnails in XP Pro Explorer. They are very slow to appear – passing thr cursor over them assists – and often initially display as a smaller icon size image inside a larger empty thumbnail. Refreshing with "F5" restores the full thumbnail pic.

Also sometimes the smaller "icon" size image comes up with the "PSD" photoshop logo. Explorer occasionally crashes when moving from open photoshop back to explorer. Hence I suspect some software clash??

I have Pentium 4 3.2 Gig with hyperthreading and 1 gig RAM. Radeon 9800 Pro AIW Graphics card ( so should be up to the job ?!)

Has anyone seen this and know how to fix? It’s driving me nuts.

Many Thanks

Sam

When Photoshop starts behaving ‘odd’, the only thing you can do is rese it’s preferences.

On Windows boxes, do the following:

Press and hold Shift+Alt+Control (Windows) immediately after launching’. When it asks choose ‘Yes’.

This always fixes all Photoshop-made problems. Color settings are no affected by it, only Preferences and Palettes so you’ll have to se them up again.

But, I don’t believe it’s a Photoshop problem.

It’s more like it’s Radeon’s RAM handling or your computers RA handling.

Try opening the box and take Radeon out and put any card just to test Boot up and do your usual Photoshop stuff. If it stops happening, i was Radeon (Radeons are often very, very buggy). Try downloading th latest driver. Now put Radeon back and see what happens.

If it didn’t stop, you might have problems with either BIOS (how ar AGP functions setup in your BIOS?), or RAM.

I have a Radeon 9500 Pro, which is supposed to work great (it does whe playing games but I don’t do much of playing anyway) but durin ordinary work gives barely visible, yet visible shadows besides text This is so annoying I’m going to sell it very soon and get eithe Parhelia or some good GeForce

Explorer is usually very slow displaying thubs. You’s want to get a decent image browser (IrfanView, XnView, ThumbsPlus, to name a few). Crashing seems to occur when there are too many pics in the folder (at least that’s what was once mentioned on this ng). Also, PSD files are not supported by the Explorer. If you get a thumbnail, it’s the one that’s embeded into the PSD file. Explorer *does not* generate thumbs from PSD files. I think only JPG, PNG, GIF and TIFF (probably BMP) files generate thumbs in Explorer.
