How to cut a picture…

made a picture of a person in my garden. now i only want the person to be in the picture, not the background. Is there a way that i can cut the person out and than put in a new picture?? The space around the object (= the person) has to be transparent.

You need to use the various selection tools (magic wand, lasso, quick-mask mode) to define the area you require. You can then either:

1) Delete the remainder after changing the layer to something other than background and inverting the selection
2) Copy the selection to the pasteboard prior to pasting into a new (or different) image
