Hi!

I created in Photoshop 7 (PC with XP) an image that had a background photo in one layer and some text in another layer. It was saved as a .PSD file, so all the layers and text could be worked in the future.

The problem is when I try to open it on another friend’s computer which only has the Photoshop 5.5, it doesn’t recognize the text as editable text, as it was saved, but as a picture with the contour all jagged.

I searched for something like a check box that could let me save for an earlier version, like some programs (Corel) do, but didn’t find any.

Thanks!!

I don’t remember when the text tool changed for sure, but I think it was in PS6. At any rate, you cannot edit text once the file has been saved in the earlier versions of PS.

🙁

And is there any free patch or upgrade that could correct this problem in 5.5??

I was already told that in 5.5 if we want to add some effects to text it had to be rendered first and after that it would not be editable anymore. But why is that PhotoShop 5.5 when it opens the file it has to render the text immediately? This work doesn’t even have any kind of effects in the text!

If I save it with other extension, like .tiff (i think this one even if flatting the image it preserves the layers using some code), can I then open it in Corel having then the layers with editable text??

If not, can you think of anything else? 🙁

Thanks!!

No.

I think you will find that if you create a new file in 5.5 and add a text layer, once you commit to the text (close the dialog box) the text is rendered at that point. Text rendered in 5.5 is no longer editable; if you want to change the text, you create a new text layer.

You may be able to open the PS7 files in Corel but I have no idea if the text will be editable in that software. If you have resaved any of the files in PS5.5 format, I can guarantee it will not.

Your only sure bet is to find a computer with PS6 or newer and do your work there (assuming you have not resaved in 5.5 format, as specified above).

It’s not a "problem with PS 7"… Photoshop 7 did not exist when Photoshop 5.5 was developed.

And that’s kind of why people pay for upgrades – to get extra features like editable text. If all the extra features were available as free patches, we’d still be on Photoshop 3.

Actually, PS 5 introduced editable text. But the tool was completely different back then. You didn’t enter the text directly on to the canvas, you entered into a text box and then it was rendered on screen.

Perhaps because of the difference in the way the tools work the text is rasterized by earlier versions of Photoshop.
