Hi, all. I’ve been using photoshop to enhance my drawings for about two years. Recently, I’ve experienced problems I’ve never encountered previously. It goes something like this:

Last night, I colorized one of my line drawings, generating an image which was sharp, smooth and crystal clear. Everything looked fine, and once I’d finished, I saved it in jpeg format, same as I have about a zillion times before.

This morning, I opened the file to do some final detailing, and the image looked grainy and sort of ‘clumped’ if you know what I mean. I attempted to smooth it out using smart blur (or air brush in some cases), but the image turned grainy all over again after I saved, closed and re-opened later.

This has been happening for about two weeks, and I can’t work out what’s causing it or how to prevent it. I haven’t changed any settings from what I normally use, and I’ve tried different ‘remedies’, such as saving the image in different formats.

I’m at my wits’ end trying to figure this one out. Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated at this point.

Thanks.

K.

As you know, it’s better to keep the saved image in PS or perhaps TIFF format, but are you _certain_ the drawing in question is as large (so-called ‘resolution’) as the others?

Here’s an example of how a mistake can happen. Today I did some scans the lazy way – using Epsons ‘one touch’ (whatever) button. The third of five scans was smaller than the other four. I have no idea how it happened, except that I should not have used the ‘automatic’ (default) setting. It turned on me, giving me a file 25% the size of the others. Of course, it was inferior.

Don’t save any work in progress as a JPEG. JPEGs are "lossy" except for the new JPEG2000. So repeated savings a JPEG will add repeated compression, resulting in artifacts and blemishes.

Save your work in Photoshop’s native format, PSD and then save copies as JPEGs. This way, when you save a new version as a JPEG, you can overwrite the old one without compounding the compression. The added benefit is that if you have numerous layers, including text, they will all remain editable. Once you save as a JPEG, you can’t edit the text. If you spelled something incorrectly, you’re stuck.
