I am trying to figure out how to do this simple task, but I cannot find it in the Adobe Help system that came with my program. I have a photo with a roller skater doing a trick. I want to crop just the roller skater out of the background so I can use him on a website. I tried using the pen tool, but then it just makes him all white or whatever color is currently chosen. How would I crop the skater as is, and take him away from the background? How would I be able to get him into his own JPEG? Thanks you for any help!

There are lots of ways to achieve this. Which is best is a matter of personal preference. Some possibilities:

Look at the Extract tool [under Filters] – this can do a good job.

The more common method would be to use one of the selection tools [like magnetic lasso]. I’d tend to use that first, to get a reasonable selection. Then swap to QuickMask mode and clean it up with a paintbrush. Having selected, you can copy onto a new layer.

Whatever you do, you will end up with th efigure on its own layer. To get that into a JPEG by itself, you need to delete any other layers. You will always have a background, as a JPEG is, by definition, rectagular.

If your pen tool path is filling in with color you need to check the center box just to the right of the pen in the options bar.
