Is it safe to add metadata data to jpeg files from the Photoshop CS file browser?

I know you can loselessly rotate jpegs, but none of the documentation talks about whether adding the metadata to a JPEG is loseless. Does Photoshop CS resave the JPEG or does it just edit the metadata portion. I treat all my photos as negatives, but I would like to put in copyright info before throwing it off to readonly archival disk.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, provided you re-save the file at the same compression ratio. As there has been no change to the image data, re-saving will not adversely affect the image quality.

Um… Working with metadata under CS doesn’t require saving or resaving. The file browser allows mass (or would you call it batch) changes to all files in a directory.

As for re-saving a JPEG, unless it states explicitly in the manual (or a Adobe developer says so), I would not chance that the program won’t recompress the JPEG even if the compression stays the same. Too risky. Thanks for the reply, though.

The question still stands, whether when CS writes metadata whether it loads and resaves the jpeg also.

I’d like to know the answer, too. I do notice that the file size increases when metadata is added.

And another problem: the Date Created and Date Modified (in File Properties) appear to change to random dates (for example, several images to which I added metadata today now have dates in 2010, and another one has a date in 1987!). Since I read in another thread that these are the only fields that can be used for date sorting, this seems like a serious problem, as well as an odd one.
